SAN FRANCISCO – Three Oregon State gymnasts were honored on the 2016 Pac-12 Conference Women's Gymnastics All-Conference team announced Tuesday. Madeline Gardiner and Kaytianna McMillan earned first team honors and Risa Perez received second team accolades.
The All-Conference first team consists of the top six all-around competitors, plus the top three competitors in each individual event who are not among the all-around honorees. Scores are determined by regional qualifying score after the Pac-12 Championships. After the top six all-arounders and the top three student-athletes from each event were named to the first team, a 10-member All-Conference second-team was selected. The same formula used for selecting the first team was used to select the second team.
Gardiner, a junior from Cambridge, Ontario, earned first team All-Pac-12 in the all-around for the second straight season. In 2016, Gardiner has performed in the all-around in all 11 meets hitting 43 out of 44 routines. She has achieved career-highs in the all-around (39.500), vault (9.900), uneven bars (9.875) and balance beam (9.950). Last week, she scored 9.95 on the beam to tie as a Pac-12 co-champion on the event. She was named Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week in February following a 39.475 performance in the all-around and an upset win over California. Gardiner, who studies exercise and sport science, also earned Pac-12 second team honors on the beam in 2014.
McMillan, a junior from Coburg, Ore., secured all-conference honors for the second straight season. Her work on the uneven bars in 2016 has been exceptional where she ranks No. 7 in the nation. Over the last six meets, McMillan, a human development and family sciences major, has scored 9.90 or better five times earning her Pac-12 First Team accolades. This season, she has raised her career-high marks on bars (9.950) and beam (9.950). In 2015, McMillan earned second team honors on the floor exercise.
Perez, a senior liberal studies major from Las Vegas, Nev., earned All-Pac-12 honors for the first time in her career garnering second team accolades on the balance beam. Perez set a career-high last week at Pac-12 Championships scoring 9.950 to tie for first at a Pac-12 co-champion on the beam.
