QUERENCIA, Mexico -- Freshman Trevor Yu fired a 1-under 70 to lead the Oregon State men's golf team in the first round of the three-day, 54 hole Cabo Collegiate on Sunday.
Yu, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, majoring in business, had four birdies and three bogeys at the par-71, 6,928-yard Los Cabos Querencia to shoot his career-best 1-under 70.
The Beavers sit in eighth place in the 15-team field after the first round with a 3-over 287. Only four teams are in red figures, led by South Florida's 10-under 274.
“It was a really nice start for the team,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “This course demands a player's attention on every shot. It's intimidating off the tee and then on the greens you really have to pay attention to the grain.
“I felt like it was a bit of a nervy start to begin with a few lost balls, but the guys settled in and played some solid golf.
“I thought Trevor Yu did a really nice job of not allowing the previous shot to effect him and was focused on what needed to be done.”
Senior Tyler Carlson shot an even-par 71, junior Calum Hill finished with a 1-over 72, junior Kevin Murphy had a 3-over 74 and junior Conner Kumpula opened with a 9-over 80.
Mario Carmona of Rice holds the clubhouse individual lead with a 5-under 66. Three players are a stroke back with a 4-under 67.
