Hamblin Selected As Senior CLASS Award Finalist
February 18, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – Oregon State senior Ruth Hamblin has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the Women's Basketball Senior CLASS Award, one of the most prestigious student-athlete honors in the country.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their athletic platforms to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of candidates announced in January. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through March 21. Fan votes will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches to determine the winners. The Senior CLASS Award recipients will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Women's Final Four®.
Hamblin, the reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, is the NCAA's active career leader in blocks, and holds the Oregon State record in that stat. The 6-foot-6 Canadian, who was named to the Naismith Trophy Early Season Watch List in December, is one of 20 players in Oregon State history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. She is averaging 11.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season.
Over the course of her career, Hamblin has helped the Beavers reach new levels of success on the floor. Oregon State has been a fixture in the Top-25 during her time as an upperclassman, reaching No. 7 in the AP Poll this week, and is currently in the midst of its third-straight 20-win season.
Off the floor, Hamblin has excelled as a Mechanical Engineering major. The senior has earned Academic All-District honors three-straight years, and is currently on schedule to graduate from school at the end of winter quarter, one term short of four years. She was also highlighted by Chevron and Pac-12 Networks last season as part of their Human Energy Stories series, which recognizes student-athletes majoring in science, technology, engineering and math.
