CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's basketball team extended its winning-streak to 12 consecutive games Sunday afternoon, defeating Utah 72-53 in front of a Gill Coliseum crowd of 4,278. The 12-game streak is the second-longest in school history, trailing only the Beavers' 14-game winning streak in 1982-83.
“I loved the way we started and set the tone early,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “I thought we moved the ball really well today and we finished really well. This was a good team win today, and a good weekend overall.”
Senior Naismith Trophy candidate Jamie Weisner led the Beavers with a career-high tying 27 points, shooting 8-for-18 from the floor and hitting all eight of her free throw attempts. Weisner also notched seven rebounds and four assists in the winning effort. Junior Sydney Wiese had a big game of her own, dishing out 10 assists after recording eight helpers in Friday's game. The OSU point guard tallied six rebounds, two blocks and a pair of steals.
Senior Ruth Hamblin recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Fellow senior Deven Hunter put up 11 points and three assists.
The game marked a milestone for Rueck, who earned his 400th career win, 288 with George Fox and 112 with Oregon State.
As a team, the Beavers (22-3, 13-1 Pac-12) shot 40.9 percent on the afternoon, compared to 34.5 percent for Utah (14-11, 6-8). Oregon State also held a 44-36 edge on the glass and a 21-8 edge in second-chance points.
The Beavers used an early 11-0 run to jump in front by 12 midway through the first quarter. Utah would close the gap late in the frame, as Oregon State took a 22-14 advantage into the second quarter.
Utah surged back to start the second frame, cutting the lead to four before Weisner and freshman Taylor Kalmer answered with back-to-back baskets to give the Beavers a 29-20 edge. Oregon State would take a 10-point lead into the intermission.
OSU started the second half on fire, outscoring Utah 7-2 in the opening minutes of the period to stretch the advantage to 15 at 41-26. Utah would not get within single digits from there, as the Beavers cruised to a 19-point victory.
The Beavers will play their final regular-season home games next weekend, when they play host to USC and UCLA on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
