Hamblin Named Academic All-District
February 11, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – Oregon State senior Ruth Hamblin has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, which was released by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. This is the third Academic All-District honor for Hamblin, who also earned Academic All-America Second Team recognition last year.
Hamblin has posted a 3.85 GPA as a Mechanical Engineering major, and is on pace to finish up her undergraduate course-work at the end of winter quarter, completing her degree in less than four years. The center has also become involved in the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association, and is helping to build a research rocket for suborbital flight.
The 6-foot-6 Canadian, who has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, will go down as the best shot blocker in Oregon State history and one of the top defensive players in the history of the Pac-12. Hamblin was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year last season, and entered this year as Lindys' choice for Preseason National Defensive Player of the Year. She leads the NCAA with 361 rejections, currently the second-highest total in Pac-12 history.
Hamblin's defensive prowess has been matched by her ability on the offensive end. The center is shooting 55.6 percent from the floor this season, and became the 20th player in Oregon State history to reach the 1,000 career point mark earlier this year. She is also among the top-three in OSU history and the top-40 in Pac-12 history for career rebounds.
Hamblin will be featured in a special postgame ceremony at the Beavers' DAM Cancer game on Friday, as she donates her hair to make wigs for cancer patients. Oregon State tips off against Colorado at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at BeaverTickets.com or by calling 800-GOBEAVS.
