Beavers head to Las Vegas for Cliff Keen Invite
December 01, 2016 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team will compete in the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational this Friday and Saturday. It will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The Beavers (1-2) will take the same lineup that started a 38-7 loss to No. 10 Michigan on Nov. 20, their most recent competition. OSU took 24th in 2015 and had one placer, as 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser took third.
Coach Jim Zalesky said he's not overly concerned about the team score, and expects the Beavers to wrestle better than they did against Michigan. OSU won just 2 of 10 matches and Michigan earned bonus points in all but one of its wins.
"This is more of an individual tournament," he said. "We have guys who aren't in the rankings who will have a chance to go prove themselves against some ranked guys.
"Against Michigan, in some weights we just didn't compete," he said. "And if you don't compete, it's hard to win no matter who you wrestle, whether it's Michigan or Timbuktu. You have to compete.
"Practices [since then] have been good," he added. "Some guys have re-focused. You have to learn from it, and move forward."
OSU's projected starters are Kegan Calkins (1-2, 125); Devan Turner (1-2, 133); Joey Palmer (3-0, 141); Joey Delgado (2-1, 141); Abraham Rodriguez (2-1, 157); Rodney Williams (1-2, 165); Weston Dobler (0-3, 174); Bob Coleman (2-3, 184); Corey Griego (1-2, 197), and Cody Crawford (1-0, hwt.).
"I'm not sure who all is wrestling, a couple guys are banged up," Zalesky said. "We will see when we get down there if everybody is going to wrestle or not."
OSU's next dual meet is Dec. 15, at Utah Valley University. The Reno Tournament of Champions (Dec. 18) and the Midlands (Dec. 29-30) conclude competition for the calendar year.
By that time Zalesky plans to have the lineup set for the remainder of the season.
"You are always adjusting but after the tournaments and the dual we will figure out our lineup for sure," he said.
The Beavers begin Pacific-12 Conference action against Stanford on Jan. 30, 2017, also at Gill Coliseum. They are five-time defending Pac-12 champions.
This year's Pac-12 Championships are Feb. 26, at Stanford. The NCAA Championships are March 16-18 at St. Louis.
