Beavers Draw 2-2 With Cal
October 06, 2016 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's soccer team battled California to a 2-2 draw on Thursday at Lorenz Field in its Pacific-12 Conference home opener.
"We're pretty disappointed with this result considering the way we played today," said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "If you look at the shot count and the quality of chances, I think they're clearly in our favor. We switched off a couple times, and that's a lesson we will learn from this. I can't fault our guys for being aggressive. If we keep creating chances like that, they will continue to fall for us."
The Beavers (4-4-3, 0-1-2 Pac-12) erased a 2-1 second-half deficit and had several chances to win late in regulation, but they were unable to break through with the decisive score. They outshot Cal 16-10 and had a 6-3 edge in corners in the second half and overtime, and generally controlled the run of play.
OSU is 1-0-3 in its four overtime games this season and 3-0-5 in its last eight since its last overtime loss, to Stanford in 2013. Two of its three conference games have ended in overtime draws; the Beavers tied host San Diego State 1-1 on Sept. 29 in their Pac-12 opener.
Junior keeper Nolan Wirth had two saves. Junior forward Jordan Jones had three shots on goal sophomore forward Don Tchilao two; Jones nearly won the game in regulation but his header in the 81st minute bounced off the crossbar.
OSU led 1-0 at intermission but Cal's Jose Carrera-Garcia scored twice within five minutes of the second half to send the Bears ahead 2-1 at 65:56. OSU junior defender Sam Tweeton tallied the equalizer at 75:17 with his second career goal after a scramble in front following a corner kick.
Junior Jalen Markey and senior Devonte Small assisted. It was the first regular-season home game for Small, who came off the injury list in the aforementioned SDSU game.
OSU's Nathan Braaten notched the only goal of an evenly-played first half at 41:54. It was the first marker in 27 career games for the sophomore forward from Highlands Ranch, Colo.
Freshman Evan Sungvornrajasabh played a contested ball to junior Timmy Mueller inside the 18-yard box. Mueller and Cal keeper Drake Callender collided in the air while pursuing possession; Callender lost control, the ball rolled to Braaten and he drove home a shot from just outside the 6-yard box.
OSU outshot the Bears 7-2 and each team had three corner kicks in the first half. Callender had three saves.
The Beavers are 2-1-2 in their last five games against the Bears (4-3-2, 0-1-1), winning eight of a possible 15 points.
OSU resumes conference action at 11 a.m. Sunday against Stanford, also at Lorenz Field. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
