Beavers Drop Match at Stanford
October 27, 2016 | Men's Soccer
STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon State men's soccer team suffered a road defeat Thursday evening, as the Beavers fell 3-0 to No. 9 Stanford in Stanford, Calif.
Junior forward Timmy Mueller tallied three of Oregon State's (4-7-3, 0-4-2 Pac-12) nine shots in the match, while freshman David Norman Jr. and senior Zach Striar finished with two apiece.
Mueller created the first scoring chance of the game, shooting just wide from a tight angle in the third minute. He would take aim again 20 minutes later, but his effort from 18 yards out sailed high.
Stanford (10-2-4, 7-0-1 Pac-12) opened the scoring in the 24th minute, as Foster Langsdorf scored from eight yards out for the first goal of the match. The Cardinal added a second goal less than five minutes later, hitting the target off a set piece.
Oregon State would have a chance to cut into the lead early in the second half, when freshman Eric Diaz played a dangerous cross into the box, but the pass was cleared. Stanford would add to the lead in the 51st minute on a shot from 12 yards out.
Striar unleashed a furious shot in the 57th minute, firing a half volley from 35 yards out that rose just over the crossbar. Mueller nearly created a chance in the 74th, throwing his body in the way of a Stanford clearance, but the deflection rolled just wide of the frame. Norman whipped a teasing free kick into the box in the 81st minute, but junior Jalen Markey was unable to get on the end of it. Norman again took aim in the 87th, but his shot was saved.
Freshman defender Frazer Poulter made his Oregon State debut in the match, entering in the 55th minute.
The Beavers will head across the bay on Sunday for a matchup with California. That game will also air on Pac-12 Networks at 1 p.m.
