Beavers Fall to No. 13 UCLA
October 02, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Los Angeles, Calif. – The Oregon State men's soccer team fell to No. 13 UCLA 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles, Calif.
"It's always a challenge to stay fresh as the road team in this conference, especially after playing two overtime periods on Thursday" said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "We played 17 field players today in order to stay as fresh as possible. UCLA is always going to be tough in possession, and I thought we did well except for a few unfortunate moments.
"We created some solid chances in transition, and I can't remember the last time we were even on shots in Westwood. This one stings, but the guys know they can do better."
The Beavers (4-4-1, 0-1-1 Pac-12) narrowly missed a chance to take the lead in the 44th minute, when senior Devonte Small smashed a shot off the crossbar that bounced off the goal-line and back out.
UCLA (5-3-1, 1-1-0) came up with goals in the 54th and 58th minutes to take the victory.
The final shot count for the match was even at 11 apiece.
Oregon State created an early chance in the 11th minute on a ball whipped into the box, but a UCLA defender intervened just before the pass found the foot of junior Jordan Jones. The Beavers broke forward again about 10 minutes later, when Jaime Miralles connected with Jesse Garcia on the left wing, but the attack came up short.
Goalkeeper Nolan Wirth was called into action in the 25th minute, diving to his right to save the Bruins' first real scoring chance of the match. The junior would come up with another big stop later in the half, reacting quickly to a shot from tight.
Freshman Loke Strenov came close to putting the Beavers in front late in the first half, as he rocketed a volley just wide. Small would hit the crossbar just minutes later.
Junior Timmy Mueller took the first shot of the second half, attacking the net on a scramble in the box for an effort that was wide right.
UCLA jumped in front in the 54th minute, as Jose Hernandez found the net to give the Bruins the lead. Felix Vobejda added a second less than five minutes later.
Mueller made an attempt to cut into the lead in the 66th minute, but his header was off-frame. Oregon State would continue to press forward from there, but was unable to get on the scoresheet.
The Beavers will return to Paul Lorenz Field on Thursday, as they begin a three-match homestand with a game against California.
