Stanford Stuns Beavers with Last Second Goal
October 14, 2016 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – A match that looked to be going to overtime was held short, as No. 3 Stanford scored a goal with two seconds left to stun Oregon State women's soccer, 3-2 at Paul Lorenz Field on a rainy Friday night.
Â
No. 3 Stanford (12-1-1, 5-1 Pac-12) dominated the shot category, tallying 20 shots, while holding Oregon State to just three. The Cardinal goalkeeper, Jane Campbell saw only three shots on the night, which all but one were goals for the Beavers.
Â
OSU (5-8-2, 0-6 Pac-12) struck first after junior Nikki Faris received a pass up the field from junior Emma Jones and put a move on Campbell, who came out of the box, and chipped the ball into the goal. The goal was Faris' fifth of the season and the third for Beavers scored in the first 15 minutes of the match.
Â
The Cardinal's offense continued to pressure the Beavers as they fired eight shots in the first period. Stanford eventually found the back of the net in the 42nd minute after the ball was played into the box and Averie Collins slid it into the net for her third goal of the season to tie the match up, 1-1 going into the break.
Â
The Beavers broke the tie in the second half after freshman Taylor Lemmond took a pass from Toni Malone and put it in the top corner of the frame for her first goal of her career.
Â
Stanford again tied the match after an OSU foul was called in the box in the 78th minute and a penalty kick was given. Andi Sullivan snuck one past a diving Bella Geist in the bottom left corner on the free kick to knot the match, two-all.
Â
What looked to be an overtime match suddenly changed, after Collins struck again for the Cardinal, this time putting the ball into the bottom corner with two seconds left on the clock to give them the improbable victory.
Â
Oregon State will finish its home schedule next weekend facing Arizona State and Arizona.
