January 05, 2016 | Wrestling
A sophomore from Henley High School in Klamath Falls, Bresser went 4-1 and took second place in one of the nation's premier events, the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., on Dec. 29-30.
He advanced to the finals by pinning Tim Lambert of Nebraska in 2:21 in the
semifinals. He then lost 5-1 to Thomas Gilman of Iowa, a three-time Midlands finalist, in the championship match.
Bresser won two matches by major decision and another by pin. He improved to 16-5 this season and led the Beavers to a 12th-place finish in the tournament.
Also on Tuesday, the Beavers remained unranked in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll. They stayed No. 19 in InterMat's team rankings, but dropped out of the top-25 tournament rankings.
The Beavers (3-3) received four votes in this week's poll. That's 21 fewer than No. 25 West Virginia, which OSU defeated 23-9 on Nov. 15. The Beavers were the only Pacific-12 Conference team receiving votes.
Bresser (16-5) remained ranked No. 6 by InterMat and No. 7 by The Open Mat. He is 7-4 against ranked opponents this season.
Redshirt sophomore heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi (14-2) dropped to No. 9 in The Open Mat rankings and to No. 10 in the InterMat rankings after losing twice at the Midlands. He had been ranked No. 5 in both polls.
Redshirt junior 133-pounder Joey Palmer (14-7) dropped out of the The Open Mat rankings; he was 19th in the previous poll.
Penn State stayed No. 1, followed by Iowa, North Carolina State, Missouri and Virginia Tech.
OSU resumes dual-meet competition on Thursday with a 4 p.m. showdown at No. 13 Michigan. They conclude the road trip at 11 a.m. Saturday at No. 16 Central Michigan.
