McKenzie sets long jump record
January 31, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
A sophomore from Benson High School in Portland, McKenzie soared 18 feet, 9.50 inches to shatter teammate Kara Hallock's old mark (18-3) by more than six inches. It was a PR by nearly 16 inches; her old best was 17-4.75.
Teammate Lucinda Howard, a senior from Summit High in Bend, placed fifth with the second-longest jump in school history, 18-7, a PR by 13 inches.
“Jasmin and Lucinda has some really big jumps,” coach Kelly Sullivan said.
The Beavers also re-wrote the record book in the 800, with three new top-10 performances. Senior Maureen Tremblay ran the third-fastest time in school history (2:16.20) and placed 13th. Freshman Juliana Mount took 14th in 2:16.62, the fifth-best time ever, and sophomore Gwyneth McMorris of Corvallis High was 25th in 2:18.55, the sixth-fastest time ever.
Sara Almen, a senior from Santiam Christian High, was third in the high jump at 5-7 in her first indoor competition since 2013.
Sophomore Kerissa D'Arpino of North Valley High in Grants Pass took ninth in the preliminary qualifying of the 60 meters in 7.84 and advanced to the semifinals. She then placed 14th in 7.75 and missed advancing to the finals by one-tenth of a second.
All told the Beavers set two school record and improved on eight all-time top-10 marks at the two-day meet.
“Overall it was a good couple days,” Sullivan added. “We opened our season two weeks later than we did last year and we did very well.”
On Friday, junior Melissa Ausman of Nyssa High broke her school mark in the weight throw with a toss of 53-11.25, bettering her old standard (50-11.50) by nearly three feet. Senior Rachel Picknell of Roseburg High bettered her PR by eight inches with a mark of 47-11.25, the No. 2 effort in school history.
Also, junior Annie Sidor of Summit High cleared 11-6.25 to PR by nearly three inches and tie the school indoor mark.
Next up for the Beavers is the Portland Indoor Invitational, set for Thursday and Friday at the House of Track.
