Three former Oregon State standouts will play for the Carolina Panthers when they face the Denver Broncos on Feb. 7 in the 50th Super Bowl, to be played at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Super Beavers are veteran quarterback Derek Anderson (2001-04); veteran defensive tackle Dwan Edwards (2000-03), and offensive lineman Mike Remmers (2008-11). Anderson and Edwards are backups; Remmers is Carolina's starting right offensive tackle.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. PST. The game will be televised by CBS; with Jim Nantz (play-by-play), Phil Simms (analyst), Tracy Wolfson (sidelines) and Evan Washburn (sidelines) on the broadcast team.
The Broncos will also have an OSU connection. Defensive back Ryan Murphy (2011-14) is on their practice squad, but won't be active for the game.
Anderson backed up starter Cam Newton and completed 4 of 6 passes this season for 36 yards. Edwards was in Carolina's defensive tackle rotation and had 14 tackles. Remmers started every game.
There are now 20 former Beaver players with a Super Bowl connection, starting with receiver Bob Grim (Minnesota) and running back Paul Lowe (Kansas City), whose teams clashed in Super Bowl 4 in New Orleans in 1970. Grim also played for the Vikings in Super Bowl 11, at the Rose Bowl in 1977.
Other Super Bowl Beavers are defensive lineman Fred Anderson (Pittsburgh, SB 13); offensive lineman Darrick Brilz (Washington, SB 22); defensive back Brandon Browner (Seattle, SB 48; New England, SB 49); offensive lineman Kyle DeVan (Indianapolis, SB 44), and defensive lineman Ron East (Dallas, SB 5).
Also, tight end Ron Heller (San Francisco, SB 23); offensive lineman Adam Koets (N.Y. Giants, SB 42); defensive back Keenan Lewis (Pittsburgh, SB 45); linebacker Rob Nairne (Denver, SB 12); utility Brian Taylor (Buffalo, SB 26); defensive back Kenny Taylor (Chicago, SB 20); defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo (Atlanta, SB 33), and defensive lineman Jerry Wilkinson (L.A. Rams, SB 14).
Also, St. Louis Rams punter Johnny Hekker (2006-09) will play in his third consecutive Pro Bowl this Sunday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.
Hekker averaged 47.9 yards on 96 punts in 2015, with a long of 68 yards and 41 attempts either downed or caught inside the 20-yard line.
In other news involving OSU Super Bowl alums, DeVan has been hired as the offensive line coach at Ball State. He worked with new BSU head coach Mike Jerry Neu on the New Orleans Saints in 2015 as an assistant offensive line coach.
A three-year starter and four-year letterman (2004-07) for the Beavers, DeVan was a graduate assistant at USC in 2014 and at OSU in 2013 after completing his professional career. He played for Indianapolis, Philadelphia and Tennessee in the NFL and appeared in four postseason games with the Colts, including Super Bowl XLIV.
