Hamblin Paces Beavers Past Buffaloes
January 25, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – Senior Ruth Hamblin set a season-high with 20 points as the No. 8/11 Oregon State women's basketball team notched a 61-47 win over Colorado Sunday afternoon at the Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo.
“This is a tough trip,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “We played the defense that we needed to and survived some offensive droughts. Sweeping the Mountain schools is never an easy thing, and it's something we have to be happy about. I'm proud of this team and proud of the effort, and we're looking forward to heading home.”
Hamblin shot 8-for-12 on the evening to notch the sixth 20-point game of her career. The Canadian also added seven rebounds and two blocks. Fellow senior Jamie Weisner scored 14 points to record her 12th-straight double-digit scoring game.
Sophomore Marie Gulich matched a career-high with 10 rebounds, and added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting off the bench. Junior Gabriella Hanson put up nine points and five boards.
The Beavers dominated the glass in the contest, holding a 47-32 edge in rebounds. Oregon State also held a big edge in points in the paint, out-pacing Colorado 30-18.
Hamblin provided most of the Beavers' offense early on, scoring the team's first five baskets on her way to 10 first-quarter points. Oregon State would make a late run in the frame to take a 20-14 advantage into the second quarter.
The teams traded punches throughout the second quarter. The Buffaloes would cut the deficit to two midway through the period, but the Beavers would respond to take a 32-27 lead into the break. Oregon State shot 42 percent in the first half, compared to 33 percent for Colorado.
Colorado cut the lead to three early in the third quarter, but Oregon State answered with a 10-0 run, as the Beavers held the Buffaloes scoreless for a stretch of nearly five minutes. OSU would lead by as many as 13 in the period, before taking a 49-41 edge into the closing frame.
The Beavers used another 10-0 run to extend the lead to 59-43 with six minutes to play, and Oregon State would control the game from there, on its way to the 14-point win.
The Beavers will return home Friday for a Pac-12 matchup with Arizona. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. and will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
