August 29, 2015 | Women's Basketball
LUCCA, Italy – The Oregon State women's basketball team posted another strong performance Saturday evening, topping AD Basket Femminile Le Mura 60-35 to earn its second win in as many days on this summer's Italian tour.
“I thought we started a little bit sluggish, but overall we played well,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “We were going against a veteran opponent that plays at a very high level. I loved our defensive intensity from the beginning, and I think we are continuing to grow, which is exciting. This was a really good win for us.”
Senior Ruth Hamblin led the way for Oregon State, putting up a double-double with 10 points and 10 blocks. Junior Sydney Wiese scored nine points, all in the first half, and pulled down eight boards. Junior Kolbie Orum and freshman Taylor Kalmer tallied eight points apiece.
Senior Deven Hunter went for six points and six rebounds, while sophomore Marie Gulich notched five points and five rebounds.
The teams battled close for the opening 10 minutes, as Wiese hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Beavers a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Oregon State would create some separation in the second frame, extending its run to 10 unanswered points to take a 19-11 advantage. The Beavers would continue to stretch the edge from there, carrying a 32-20 lead into the intermission.
Oregon State would proceed to control play for the majority of the third quarter en-route to the 25-point win.
“It was a long day of travel today, but I thought we played really well,” Wiese said. “The freshmen brought a lot to the table today. We rebounded well and we hit shots, so overall I think it was a really good game for us.”
AD Basket Femminile Le Mura made the quarterfinals in Italy's Serie A1 (the nation's top league) in 2014-15.
The Beavers will enjoy a tour of Florence tomorrow, before heading to Venice to take on SSD Reyer Venezia on Tuesday.
