CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State women's soccer players Bella Geist and Allison Pantuso were named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week following the Beavers 2-1 double-overtime victory at the University of Portland on Aug. 21 in their season opener.
A sophomore goalie from Rex Putnam High School in Milwaukie, Geist had six saves, including several key stops in the overtime, as the Beavers ended a 20-game winless streak by defeating the highly-regarded Pilots. Geist increased her all-time save total to 132, good for eighth place on OSU's career list.
“You want to talk about the player of the game, it's the goalkeeper. Give her credit. She kept them in the game,” Portland coach Garrett Smith said of Geist.
Making her college debut with the start of the second half, Pantuso scored at 51:14 to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead and then notched the golden goal at 1:09.39, just 21 seconds before the game would have ended in a tie.
“This was a great start to the season and a great start to Allison's freshman year,” OSU coach Linus Rhode said, speaking of the result and of the spectacular start by the freshman defender from Oaks Christian High in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The Beavers return to action this weekend with two games at Lorenz Field. They host Fresno State at 2:30 p.m. Friday in a game that will be televised by the Pac-12 Network, and then face the University of San Francisco at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
