Black Shirts Hold Offense in Check
August 22, 2015 | Football
CORVALLIS, Ore. – It was largely a defensive day at the Oregon State football team's second, and final, scrimmage of fall camp. The Beavers in black shirts held the offense out of the end zone on seven out of 10 drives.
Possibly more important the results of the intrasquad scrimmage is that offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo along with running backs Storm Barrs-Woods, Chris Brown and Deltron Sands all returned to participate in their first scrimmage of the fall.
Saturday's scrimmage, which was part of Family Fun Day and culminated in an autographs session with the entire squad, consisted of 63 plays before moving into a situational red zone period followed by a two-minute offense drill.
A week after passing for five touchdowns in the team's first scrimmage, three quarterbacks directed scoring drives all of which were capped by short yardage rushes from a triumvirate of running backs.
“The offense has definitely taken big time strides in the last week,” head coach Gary Andersen said following the scrimmage. “Defensively I thought they ran at the ball well, tackled pretty well. There weren't a whole bunch of missed tackles but we're still letting some balls over our heads and that's been a concern the last four or five days.”
Sands, a freshman, was the first to put the offense on the board with a 1-yard touchdown plunge to cap off an 9-play, 70-yard drive. Nick Mitchell completed 4-of-5 passes on the drive.
Shortly after, Seth Collins hooked up with Jordan Villamin for a 63-yard catch and run to the 2-yard line. On the next play, Brown rushed to the left side to score standing up to finish a 5-play, 70-yard drive.
Junior transfer Darell Garretson completed the scoring for the Beavers leading a methodical 12-play, 60-yard drive to paydirt. Garretson completed 3-of-5 passes and rushed three times before giving the ball to Damien Haskins who scored from six yards out.
Overall, the Beavers' quarterbacks – Collins, Mitchell, Garretson and Marcus McMaryion – completed 19 out of 30 passes for 203 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
The defense accounted for a pair of quarterback sacks on the day and several pass break-ups and allowed just 108 rushing yards on 33 attempts.
The Beavers will have an off day Sunday before returning to the practice field for their final double day on Monday. The rest of the team's practices leading up to the season-opener are closed to the public.
