Fall Scrimmage No. 1 is in the Books
August 15, 2015 | Football
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Just eight days and eight practices into fall camp and the Oregon State Beavers are moving rapidly toward the 2015 season opener against Weber State, Friday, Sept. 4.
The first major milestone has been passed as the Beavers held their first scrimmage of the fall totaling 66 plays, covering 329 yards and generating 35 points. The team finished practice working on red zone and backed up situations.
The defense dominated early on in the scrimmage recording three-and-outs on the first six drives with each quarterback – Seth Collins, Marcus McMaryion and Nick Mitchell – in charge of two drives apiece. Amongst the mayhem, sophomore David Henry recorded a scoop-and-score picking up a botched handoff to put six on the board for the defense in the early going.
The offense settled in with Collins directing a seven-play, 70-yard scoring drive capped off by his 12-yard touchdown strike to former quarterback Brent VanderVeen, who scored twice during the scrimmage. It was the first of four straight scoring drives for the offense. McMaryion led a quick three-play drive on the back of sophomore tailback Jaylynn Bailey, who burst into the secondary for a 47-yard run. Bailey would score two plays later on a 21-yard pass from McMaryion down the left sideline.
On the next drive, Collins led a 14-play 60-yard drive culminating in a 2-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Ortiz. McMaryion added a 35-yard pass to Datrin Guyton just out of the reach of the defender for another touchdown.
Junior transfer Darell Garretson, who must sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules, directed one drive which he finished with a 7-yard bullet to VanderVeen to complete the scoring.
Overall, the Beavers' four quarterbacks combined to complete 17 out of 32 passes for 157 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions.
On the defensive side, in addition to Henry's fumble recovery, Adam Soesman tallied a quarterback sack while true freshmen Jay Irvine and Shawn Wilson each recorded an interception. Fellow frosh Xavier Crawford added an interception on a tipped pass during red zone drills.
With the coaching staff placing a premium on evaluating the younger, less experienced players several veterans on the offensive side cheered on their white-shirted teammates from the sidelines including running backs Storm Barrs-Woods and Chris Brown, receivers Victor Bolden, Jordan Villamin and Malik Gilmore, offensive linemen Gavin Andrew and Isaac Seumalo.
“Overall we got what we were looking for,” Andersen said about the scrimmage. “But we're far from where we need to be.”
The Beavers will have an off day Sunday before returning to the practice field for double days on Monday, Wednesday and Friday as well as single practices scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday. All weekday practices are closed to the public.
Fans' last opportunity to see the team before the season-opener is scheduled for next Saturday, Aug. 22, the Beavers host Family Fun Day. UPDATED: The scrimmage inside Reser Stadium will be open to the public beginning at 11:30 a.m. and is scheduled to conclude at 1 p.m. Family Fun Day begins at 1 p.m. with an autograph session with the entire team and coaching staff on the field.
