BOULDER, Colo. - The No. 7/8 Oregon State women's basketball team matched the school record for victories in a season Friday evening, as the Beavers posted a 66-44 win over Colorado at the Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo. The win was Oregon State's 24th of the season, as it moved to 24-2 overall, and 14-1 in Pac-12 play. The victory also maintains the Beavers' two-game cushion atop the conference, heading into the final three games of the league season.
After entering the break tied a 26, the Beavers outscored the Buffaloes 40-18 in the second half to run away with the victory. Oregon State shot 63 percent in the closing frame, while holding Colorado to just 17.4 percent.
Junior Jamie Weisner led the Beavers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, as she recorded the 10th double-double of her career.
“I think we brought a great defensive effort in the second half, and I think we stopped them from doing what they wanted to do,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “We were first to the ball on several instances, and we were able to turn those into transition points. I think we hit a nice rhythm of offensive execution in the second half. I think Colorado played a good game, but we responded well.”
Senior Ali Gibson scored 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Sophomore Sydney Wiese rounded out the Beavers in double-figures with 10 points. Junior Deven Hunter finished with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting.
Overall, the Beavers held a 41-28 advantage in rebounds, and a 24-10 edge in points in the paint.
Both teams traded baskets for the first few minutes, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Gibson and Hanson helped the Beavers jump out to an eight-point lead early on. Oregon State would extend that lead to double-figures with 8:43 remaining in the half. Colorado would charge back to get within three at the under-four media timeout, before taking the lead in the final three minutes of the period. The Beavers would bounce back with a Wiese long ball to level the score at 26 heading into the break.
Wiese led the Beavers with eight first-half points.
The teams again went back and forth to open the second half, but the Beavers were able to steadily build the lead back up to double-figures at 49-39 midway through the closing frame. Oregon State would proceed to pull away in the final seven minutes, using a 20-3 run to jump out to a 20-point lead with three minutes to play before taking the win by 22.
The Beavers will head west Sunday to take on Utah in a matinee. The game will begin at 11 a.m. PT and will be carried on Pac-12 Networks.
