CORVALLIS - An offensive explosion from sophomore Sydney Wiese helped carry the No. 8/9 Oregon State women's basketball team to a convincing 73-48 win over Arizona Sunday morning at Gill Coliseum.
Wiese finished with a season-high 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor and 6-for-8 shooting from 3-point range. The performance was the seventh 20-point game of Wiese's young career, and she also finished with five assists.
With the win, the Beavers extend the best start in school history to 23-2, and remain atop the Pac-12 with a 13-1 conference record.
“This was another great crowd today,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “This was another great win for us, and the number that really jumped out was the rebound disparity. We just showed a lot of heart, energy and hustle. I loved our defense in the second half, and I think we shared the ball really well. It was another great team win.”
Oregon State held a 48-22 advantage on the boards in the contest, and shot 47.5 percent, compared to 35.8 percent for the Wildcats, including 48 percent to 21.7 percent advantage in the second half. The Beavers never trailed in the game.
Junior Jamie Weisner scored 11 points and pulled seven rebounds, as she continues to be among the top rebounding guards in the conference. Sophomore Gabriella Hanson finished with nine points, five boards and four assists.
Junior Ruth Hamblin continued to add to her career blocks record, rejecting three shots and scoring eight points. Junior Deven Hunter pulled down nine rebounds.
Oregon State jumped on top right from the start, jumping out to an 8-2 lead to start the game. The teams would proceed to trade baskets from there, as the Beavers led by seven at the midway point of the opening frame. The Wildcats would fight back from there to get within three, before Oregon State used a 7-0 run to get the lead to double-figures. The Beavers would hang onto the lead from there, heading into the break up 39-30.
Hamblin and Wiese both finished the opening frame with eight points.
Oregon State came out strong in the second half, scoring eight unanswered early in the period to take a 15-point lead. The Beavers would go on to break it open midway through the second half, when Wiese hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions to bring the lead to 26. Wiese's offensive outburst coincided with a clamp-down from the Beaver defense, as Oregon State held Arizona scoreless for a span of over nine minutes.
All 10 active players saw time in the contest for OSU, with nine of the getting on the scoresheet.
The Beavers will hit the road this week, as they head to Boulder to take on Colorado on Friday, in a game that will be carried live on Pac-12 Networks.
