December 13, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Corvallis, Ore. – Junior guard Sydney Wiese became the 19th player in Oregon State history with 1,000 or more points and the No. 7 Beavers stayed undefeated with a 69-44 win over Idaho on Saturday before a Gill Coliseum crowd of 2,834.
"I thought our defense was as good as it's been all year," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "We didn't shoot the ball all as well as we have in some other games, and credit Idaho for defending us well. I thought we played with a great amount of intensity and challenged shots against a team that is very hard to guard. We were focused all day, we kept them out of transition and we executed well."
Wiese scored 16 points and now has an even 1,000 for her 74-game career. Only three players in that exclusive group (Tanja Kostic, Carol Menken-Schaudt, Judy Shannon) reached that milestone in fewer games.
She also grabbed 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, and added four assists as the Beavers (7-0) improved to 31-3 in their last 34 games at Gill Coliseum over the past two-plus seasons. Her two 3-pointers increased her school record to 221.
"Any day where you reach 1,000 is a good day," Wiese said. "Credit to my teammates for getting me open, I couldn't have done this without coach Rueck and all of his support. But the most important thing is that we got the win. It's an honor to reach this mark, but now it's on to the next one."
Junior guard Gabriella Hanson added 10 points and five assists and senior center Ruth Hamblin just missed her 20th career double-double as she had nine points and 13 rebounds. She also blocked two shots to extend her school record to 316.
Freshman guard Taylor Kalmer came off the bench and scored 10 points, the first double-digit performance of her young career. Her previous high was seven points in the season-opener against Longwood. Sophomore forward Marie Gulich had eight points.
OSU outrebounded the Vandals 51-44 and had 16 assists and a season-low eight turnovers. They outscored Idaho 22-12 in the paint and 17-4 in second-chance points.
The Beavers scored the first nine points and jumped out to a 20-4 lead after the first quarter. Idaho drew within 27-21 with 3:27 left in the second quarter, but OSU's Breanna Brown scored with one second left to give the Beavers a 33-24 halftime edge.
OSU then outscored the Vandals (7-3) 20-5 in the third quarter to remove all doubt. They led by as many as 27 points before settling for the 25-point win, their fifth by 21 or more points this season.
OSU held the Vandals to 20 percent shooting (13-64 overall and 16 percent (5-31) from beyond the arc. The 44 points allowed was a season-low for OSU, which has held five of its seven opponents to 50 points or less.
The Beavers host Cal State-Bakersfield at 11 a.m. Tuesday in their next game. It's OSU's fifth annual Beavers Beyond the Classroom game; more than 7,000 students from local grade schools and middle schools will visit Gill Coliseum for a day of fun and learning.
The Beavers then face perennial national power Tennessee at 6 p.m. Dec. 19 at Gill Coliseum. The game that will be televised by Pac-12 Networks and Pac-12 Oregon. Tickets for that game, and for every other home game, are available at BeaverTickets.com or by calling 800-GOBEAVS.
