Fifteen Beavers Named to Pac-12 Academic Team

SAN FRANCISCO – Three Oregon State football players, Damien Haskins, Will Hopkins and Isaac Seumalo, led 15 Beaver football student-athletes on the 2015 Pac-12 Conference Football Academic Teams, the league announced Tuesday.

A sophomore offensive tackle, Hopkins, earned first team honors for the second straight year behind his 4.00 grade point average in business marketing in OSU's Honors College. Haskins, a sophomore running back boasts a 3.47 GPA in public health, while Seumalo, a redshirt junior offensive lineman has a 3.44 GPA in business administration. A trio of second team selections received their first Pac-12 academic awards with redshirt freshman offensive lineman Drew Clarkson (3.64, undecided), redshirt freshman defensive tackle Sumner Houston (3.25, pre-construction engineering) and junior tight end Brent VanderVeen (3.21, sociology) garnering recognition.

Nine other Beavers received academic honorable mention including: junior linebackers Malik Gilmore (3.07, economics), Kyle Haley (3.07, public health), and Ricky Ortiz (3.27, agricultural sciences), redshirt freshmen quarterbacks Marcus McMaryion (3.30, exercise and sport science) and Nick Mitchell (3.84, undecided), redshirt freshman running back Ryan Nall (3.03, undecided), redshirt freshman safety Gabe Ovgard (3.47, business), sophomore kicker Garrett Owens (3.31, sociology) and junior offensive lineman Dustin Stanton (3.30, business administration).

It is the third time Ortiz and Stanton have been recognized for their efforts in the classroom.

To be eligible for the Pac-12 All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and appear in at least 50 percent of their team's games in most instances.

The Beavers travel to Eugene to face the Oregon Ducks Friday at 1 p.m. on FOX Sports 1 in the Civil War Series presented by PacificSource Health Plans, McDonald's, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
