Beavers Boat Race Zags at Portland Fall Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon State Varsity 8 motored past Gonzaga in a convincing victory at the Portland Fall Classic Sunday in the Rose City.
The Beavers' V8, directed by Zack Moffitt and powered by Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Spencer Smith, Collin Griffitts, Baxter Call, Austin Erickson, Grant VanKampen and Sasha Kosek, registered a time of 15-minutes, 54.48-seconds to claim first place over the Zags, who pulled in with a time of 16:19.27, in the Men's Collegiate Varsity 8 race.
The Oregon State Junior Varsity 8, racing in the Men's Collegiate Junior Varsity 8 category, posted a time of 16:19.04 to not only win the JV8 race, but also finish with a better time than Gonzaga's top crew.
“The battle between our JV and the Zags' varsity was exciting to watch,” head coach Gabe Winkler said. “The weather can be tricky here sometimes but the guys handled it well.”
OSU also raced a third boat, the JV8 'B', with a crew consisting entirely of freshmen including, Austin DeMartine, Aaron Baker, Hunter Smith, Tanner Best, Camron Gharib, Chandler Boyd, Garrett Johnson and Connor Crozier and coxed by Sydney Poe.
“The performance these guys put in today will make for some tight selection for the top boats next week.”
The Beavers are back in action next Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Head of the Lake in Seattle.
