Beavers Blitz Bruins 65-47
January 04, 2015 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 13/13 Oregon State women's basketball team held UCLA to 25 percent shooting (15-for-60), as the Beavers opened Pac-12 play with a 65-47 victory in Pauley Pavilion. The win brings the Beavers to 11-1 on the season, the best start in school history through the first 12 games.
“I was really proud of the effort tonight,” said head coach Scott Rueck. “Before the game we talked a lot about keeping them out of transition and winning the rebounding battle, and I think we did both of those things. UCLA is very talented and very well coached. Our offense went cold for a stretch, but our defense pulled us through it.”
The Bruins (5-8, 1-1 Pac-12) are the sixth team the Beavers have held under 30 percent shooting this season, and the contest marked the second time this year Oregon State has held an opponent under 50 points.
Junior Jamie Weisner scored 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field. She added five rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Sydney Wiese tallied 16 points and three assists, while fellow sophomore Gabriella Hanson scored in double-figures for the fourth-straight game, finishing with 11 points and seven boards.
Junior Ruth Hamblin pulled down 13 rebounds, to help the Beavers to a 51-31 advantage on the glass.
The Oregon State defense shut down the Bruin offense to open the contest, keeping UCLA off the board for the first five minutes, as the Beavers jumped out to an eight-point lead. Most of the OSU offense came from beyond the arc early on, as six of the Beavers' first seven baskets came from downtown, and Oregon State jumped out to a 20-10 lead.
The Beavers would extend the lead as high as 17 before taking a 35-23 advantage into the intermission. Oregon State shot 46.4 percent in the first half (13-for-28), including 50 percent (8-for-16) from three-point range. The Beavers also held UCLA to 22.2 shooting (8-for-36) and out-rebounded the Bruins 28-15.
UCLA made a push to start the second half, cutting the advantage to single-digits within the first four minutes of the frame. Oregon State would surge back, though, knocking down four-straight field goals to get the advantage to 55-40 with eight minutes to play. The Beavers would remain in control from there, cruising to the 18-point victory.
The Beavers will look for their first road sweep of the Southern California schools since 2001 on Monday, when they take on USC at the Galen Center.
