January 20, 2015 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior Jamie Weisner scored over 20 points for the second consecutive game as the No. 9/9 Oregon State women's basketball team defeated Washington 75-67 Monday evening at Gill Coliseum.
With the win, Oregon State improves to 16-1 on the season, and 6-0 in Pac-12 play, extending the best start in school history. The victory was also the Beavers' 17th consecutive win at Gill Coliseum, extending a school record.
Weisner followed up Friday's 25-point performance with 26 points on 9-for-15 shooting on Monday. She also set a career-high with six three-pointers and pulled down eight rebounds.
“Once again, another great atmosphere for women's basketball at Gill Coliseum,” said head coach Scott Rueck. “I am so thankful to Beaver Nation for supporting us like that. Hats off to Washington. They played a great basketball game, and they defended us really well. I thought we showed a ton of heart in closing this one out. We executed at both ends of the floor down the stretch, and we got the rebounds we needed. This was another gut-check game, and it showed the character of this team.
Junior Ruth Hamblin posted her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Sydney Wiese set a new career high with 12 assists, the highest total by a Beaver guard in over eight years.
Sophomore Gabriella Hanson scored eight points, while Wiese and junior Deven Hunter finished with seven points apiece.
Oregon State shot 42.4 percent from the field in the contest, including 53.8 percent in the second half. The Beavers held Washington (13-4, 3-3 Pac-12) to 32.8 percent shooting, and limited Husky standout Kelsey Plum to 10 points on 3-for-16 shooting after she entered the game averaging over 25 points per contest.
Oregon State jumped out to an early advantage, but the Huskies used an 8-0 run to take an 11-7 lead less than three minutes in. The Beavers responded immediately, however, using an 8-0 run of their own to take the lead 15-11. The teams would trade the lead from there, before OSU was able to create some separation to the tune of a nine-point edge with three minutes left in the first stanza. Washington would cut into the lead from there, as Oregon State took a 34-30 lead into the intermission.
Weisner led the Beavers with 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting in the opening frame.
Washington cut the lead to three early in the second half, but Weisner and Wiese combined to hit a trio of long balls to help OSU stretch the lead to eight. The Huskies would come back to take the lead with six minutes to play, but the Oregon State defense held the Huskies off the board for the final 5:25 to retake the lead. Senior Ali Gibson came up with a big steal with 1:21 remaining, and the Beavers went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final three minutes to take the eight-point victory.
The Beavers will head down to Tucson on Friday for a matchup with Arizona.
