TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State women's golf team played much better in the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational on Saturday to move up a spot in the 15-team field.
The Beavers shot a 15-over 303 at the par-72, 6,223-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course on Saturday after opening with a 20-over 308 on Monday to move past Washington State into 14th place with a 35-over 611. The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
“I am encouraged by some improvement today,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “We need to make further adjustments to our putting speeds; it cost us as many as six shots today. So we will work on preparing for tomorrow by improving our speed on the greens.
“Seshia and Anica played the course well today. Seshia bounced back today hitting 11 out of 18 greens and putting herself in position to score. We have an opportunity tomorrow to improve even further and pick up some momentum and confidence for the future.”
After opening the tournament with a 9-over 81, senior Seshia Telles was back to her usual solid play by posting an even-par 72 in the second round. She started on the 10th hole and was 3 over through six holes but got to 1 under after carding four birdies and seven pars over the next 11 holes before taking a bogey on the tough ninth hole. The even-par round moved her from a tie for 78th place into a tie for 61st with a 9-over 153.
Junior Anica Yoo leads the five Oregon State golfers on the individual leaderboard with a 5-over 74-75--149 that puts her in a tie for 42nd place with 18 holes to play. She was steady throughout the second round with 15 pars and three bogeys but was unable to get a chirp in the nearly perfect weather conditions.
Sophomore Chelsea Saelee slipped a bit on Saturday after firing a 2-over 74 in the opening round as she carded a 5-over 77 with two birdies and five bogeys to put her in a tie for 56th place with a 7-over 151. Senior Lauren Sewell is tied for 74th place with a 15-over 80-79--159 and freshman Jesse Hamilton is in sole 77th with a 17-over 80-81--161.
South Carolina fired an 8-under 280 on Saturday to take the team lead with an 8-under 568, which is six strokes better than host Arizona State and Duke (2-under 574). Washington (1-under 575) and Arizona (even-par 576) round out the top five.
Celine Boutier of Duke holds the individual clubhouse lead with a 6-under 69-69--138, while SooBin Kim of Washington is second with a 5-under 69-70--139, and Laetitia Beck of Duke and Hannah Suh of California are tied for third with a 4-under 140.
