TARZANA, Calif. – The Oregon State women's golf team is tied for eighth place through 36 holes of play on Monday at the Bruin Wave Invitational.
The Beavers shot a 34-over 301-309--610 at the par-72, 6,173-yard El Caballero Country Club to put them in the middle of the pack in the 17-team field. No. 1 USC was the lone team to finish the 36-hole under par, posting a 3-under 573 to put them five strokes ahead of No. 2 UCLA (2-over 578) and eight better than Pepperdine (5-over 581).
“The course is playing very difficult largely due to the storm they had over the past weekend,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “They haven't been able to mow for six days and the rough and fairways are exceedingly long and soft. Obviously it is the same for everyone and that explains some of the high scoring. We had a good day in many areas and played in large part all of the first round close to 7 over until we hit a couple of holes mid round that accounted for another 6 over.
“All in all, I am pleased with their ball striking and exceptional play out of the rough and bunkers. Chelsea Saelee had a great recovery following a quadruple-bogey this morning. She stayed with the process and followed that with an eagle and a birdie. I am proud of that bounce back from her. Mentally we need to discuss some things this evening and find a beneficial mindset for tomorrow. I know they have the ability to choose to come back with a great effort tomorrow.”
Senior Lauren Sewell continued her strong play, carding a 1-over 73 in the morning and a 5-over 77 in the afternoon to put her in a tie for 21st place with a 6-over 150. The other veteran, senior Seshia Telles, is a stroke back after posting two consistent rounds that put her in a tie for 24th with a 7-over 75-76--151.
As Coach Alexander mentioned, sophomore Chelsea Saelee battled back from an early quadruple-bogey to post a 13-over 78-79--157 for a tie for 48th, while junior is tied for 51st with a 14-over 75-83--158 and sophomore Ashlee Pickerell is tied for 54th with a 15-over 82-77--159.
Six players finished the first day in red figures, led by Doris Chen of USC who is 5 under with a 72-67--139.
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday with tee times of the first and 10th holes, and the Beavers will be paired with California and Colorado.
