KAPALUA, Hawai'i. – Seshia Telles fired a 1-under 71 in the opening round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on Monday to put her in a tie for fourth place and lead the Oregon State women's golf team into a tie for eighth place at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.

Telles had three birdies, 13 pars and two bogeys at the par-72, 6,022-yard Kapalua Bay Course and is only one stroke back of the lead, which is held by Betty Chen of UC Davis, Ying Luo of Washington and Grace Na of Pepperdine, who each shot a 2-under 70. The senior from Tualatin, Ore., got her birdies on the par-3 eighth, par-4 13^th and par-4 16^th holes.

The Beavers are tied for eighth in the 15-team field after finishing the first round with a 19-over 307. Pepperdine and Washington hold the clubhouse lead with a 2-over 290, while San Jose State (8-over 296) and UC Davis (10-over 298) are third and fourth, respectively. Oregon State is tied with host Hawai'i.

“We had some great moments today and some moments where better choices could have been made,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “Those latter choices cost the team many shots. So the commitment to making good choices is worth talking about before tomorrow's round.”

Senior Lauren Sewell and sophomore Chelsea Saelee each shot a 5-over 77, as Sewell had one birdie and six bogeys and Saelee had five bogeys and 13 pars.

Freshman Jesse Hamilton, who is making her Oregon State debut, finished with a 10-over 82, as did junior Anica Yoo to put both of them in a tie for 68^th place.

Telles, who entered her senior season as Oregon State's career leader in scoring average, shot her first sub-par round since the Topy Cup in September with the 1-under 71 on Monday. She now has 10 career rounds in red figures with one as a freshman, two as a sophomore, five as a junior and two thus far this season.

“Seshia played with tremendous thought and heart today,” Alexander said. “She is making significant progress in maintaining her attitude and focus in difficult playing conditions. I was satisfied with the effort of Lauren and Chelsea and their game plans today. The wind was a steady 20 miles per hour and you have to be considerably patient and focused to play in those conditions. It's not going to be better conditions tomorrow so the players need to adjust for it much like Seshia did today. The wind is out of our control and we need to accept that and learn how to play and score in those conditions.”

The second round will begin at 7:45 a.m. HT (10:45 a.m. PT) on Tuesday with a shotgun start.
