STANFORD, Calif. – Lauren Sewell fired a 1-over 72 in the final round of the 19th Annual Peg Barnard Invitational on Sunday to finish in a tie for sixth place, but the Oregon State women's golf team was unable to get another solid round as it finished the spring's opening tourney in 12th place.
Sewell finished the two-day, 36-hole tournament with an even-par 70-72-142 at the par-71, 6,084-yard Stanford Golf Course to post the fifth top-10 finish of her outstanding career. Dana Finkelstein of UNLV claimed medalist honors with a 5-under 69-68-137.
The Beavers shot an impressive 16-over 300 in Saturday's opening round but slipped back to a 24-over 308 on Sunday as they fell from a tie for eighth place into 12th in the 14-team field. Host Stanford ran away with the team title with a 2-over 570, while UC Davis finished second with an 18-over 586 and UNLV was third with a 24-over 592.
“Today was a tough day for the Beavs in some ways and not in others,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “I feel as if we made a lot of progress in the effort we are making to change our team culture. There will be some up and downs with this change, but overall the players will be the ones to benefit and learn the most from this experience. We have a group of dedicated players who won't let one round of golf keep them for working hard on making growth in the game a priority. The results will eventually reflect the quality of their work.”
Sewell, a senior from Renton, Wash., had three birdies on Sunday after carding four in the opening round. She only had two bogeys but took a double on the par-4 ninth, her second hole of the day.
“Lauren Sewell began her day with a rough start and really battled back using her mental toughness skills and aggressive iron play to finish even par and in a tie for sixth place in this very good field,” Alexander said. “Her favorite place to eat is In-N-Out so we are off to get her a burger animal style before heading back tonight. She is looking very prepared for the next event at Westfield, and I'm pretty sure there are In-N-Out Burger places there as well.”
Seshia Telles shot a 6-over 77 for the second straight day and finished in a tie for 42nd with a 12-over 154, while sophomore Chelsea Saelee and junior Anica Yoo both finished in a tie for 53rd with a 14-over 156 as Saelee went 78-78 and Yoo posted 75-81. Sophomore Ashlee Pickerell finished in sole 74th with a 27-over 83-86--169.
The Beavers return to action a week from today when they compete at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz., on Sunday, Feb. 23 and Monday, Feb. 24.
