Last Season
Oregon State took advantage of 11 walks and 13 hits to defeat Nebraska, 15-7, Saturday at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Kavin Keyes and Michael Conforto each drove in three runs in the win, while Jace Fry lasted seven innings for his first win since the 2012 season. OSU batted around in both the third and eighth innings en route to the win. Eight of OSU's nine starters collected at least one hit.
Not Regulars In 2013
OSU had a great deal of production Saturday from players who saw little action or weren't on the team in 2013. Nick Rulli, Gabe Clark, Caleb Hamilton, Logan Ice and Trever Morrison combined to go 6-for-19 with eight runs, seven RBI and six walks. Ice was the lone Beaver not to record a hit but was given little chance. He went 0-for-2 with three walks, two of which came with the bases loaded.
Fry's Great Outing
Jace Fry made his first start since the 2012 seasn when OSU played Belmont in Baton Rouge. He was stellar, going seven innings, allowing two runs and nine hits. He and Andrew Moore have combined to give the Beavers two quality starts to open the season.
Respect Early
Gonzaga and Nebraska have given a great deal of respect to No. 3 hitter Michael Conforto thus far. He's already been issued four walks. That's a pace of 110 through the regular season (which, of course, is not likely). Logan Ice also has four walks for OSU, which has totaled 16 through the first two games.
But Then ...
The OSU pitching staff, meanwhile, has issued just two walks the first two games (and none on Saturday). Oregon State's offense has registered a .455 on-base percentage through the two games, while opponents are at a .367 on-base percentage.
Singles
• Despite batting in the ninth spot of the order in the first two games, Trever Morrison leads OSU with nine official at bats. He's got two hits, including a double, thus far.
• The Beavers batted around twice on Saturday. They accomplished the feat twice last season, including once during the season's opening weekend.
• OSU is already 1-0 in one-run games this season. The Beavers were 14-3 in such games in 2013.
• Oregon State has yet to finish with more hits than an opponent this season.
