Jumpers Jones And Almen Lead OSU At Husky Classic

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Walter Jones finished third in the long jump, Sara Almen took fourth in the high jump and Stevie Coury placed sixth in the 60m dash to lead the Oregon State track and field team at the Husky Classic in Seattle over the weekend.
Jones hit a distance of 23' 8.75” on his third jump to secure OSU's highest finish at the meet. Almen, the Beavers' All-American candidate in the high jump, cleared 5' 7.75” on her third try and the height to finish fourth overall. It was only Almen's second meet of the season after she tied for 13th (5' 1”) and the UW Preview on Jan. 18.
Stevie Coury continued his impressive start to the season with another finals appearance in the 60m dash. The football wideout won his preliminary heat in 6.89, matching his PR to post the fourth-best qualifying time of the day. In the final, Coury finished sixth overall with a time of 6.91.
Coury, who had a limited track background at Lake Oswego High School, has now won three of the five career races at OSU, finishing first in each of his prelim heats in the 60m at the UW Indoor Preview, UW Invite and today's Husky Classic. His time of 6.89 on Saturday, which he also achieved two weeks ago, bettered his effort from the season's first meet by 12 hundredths of a second.
Almen was joined in the high jump by Allison Jackson, who finished 13th with a clearance at 5' 1.75”. Jessica Lautenbach tied for 18th with a mark of 4' 11.75” and Justine Bird tied for 22nd (4' 9.75”). Jackson's jump in her second collegiate meet improved on her first outing by three-quarters of an inch.
Along with Coury in the 60m, Malcolm Marable continued his steady improvement, PR'ing with a time of 7.07. He ran 7.10 in the season's first meet and 7.09 two weeks ago before putting forth his best effort on Saturday afternoon. Victor Bolden ran 7.25, coming in 32nd overall.
In the sprints on the women's side, Allie Church ran 7.77 for the second consecutive meet to finish third in her heat and 14th overall. Kaylene Rust ran 8.18 in her first try in the event to come in 43rd. On Friday, Church ran 25.76 in the 200m, taking her heat and finish 28th overall.
In the horizontal jumps, school record holder Michele Turney came in 15th in the triple jump with a leap of 36' 1.25”. Kaitlyn Mason led OSU's competitors in the long jump with a 26th-place finish (16' 3.75”), bettering her season-best by over eight inches. She was followed by Turney's 15' 11.75” (30th) and Rust's 15' 6.75” (36th).
Rachel Picknell posted OSU's best finish in the throws, coming in 23rd in the shot put with a toss of 40' 9.50”. She was followed by Melissa Ausman in 30th (37' 10”) and Tricia Ingraham in 37th (36'). On Friday, Ausman threw the shot put 48' 8.75” to come in 26th. Picknell had a mark of 44' 2.75” to finish in 34th.
Oregon State will have a few weeks off before it opens the outdoor season by hosting just the third-ever meet at the Whyte Track and Field Center on March 8.
