STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Lauren Sewell was one of only seven golfers to shoot a sub-par round on the opening day of the 19th Annual Peg Barnard Invitational on Saturday that lifted Oregon State into a tie for eighth at the 36-hole event.
Sewell had four birdies and three bogeys at the par-71, 6,084-yard Stanford Golf Course to finish the first round of the spring season with a 1-under 70. She is tied for third on the individual leaderboard with four other golfers and trails only Dana Finkelstein of UNLV and Lucia Gutierrez of California, who both finished with a 2-under 70.
As a team the Beavers shot a 16-over 300 and are tied for eighth with No. 28 California and ahead of No. 38 San Diego State and No. 50 Colorado, which both finished with a 21-over 305. Host Stanford leads the two-day, 36-hole event with a 3-over 287, while UC Davis is second with a 7-over 291 and San Jose State is third with an 8-over 292.
“I am very proud of this team today,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “They played with purpose and intentionality. Coming out of winter season, I see that they are learning some great lessons in their mental training and putting those lessons into play. We have more to learn about the process and beneficial self talk and they are committed to the task at hand. The outcome is only a result of the effort and choices you make. So we intend to go out tomorrow and make it a day of well planned choices and sincere effort.”
Sewell's 1-under 71 was great to see for Oregon State as she failed to shoot a sub-par score in 14 rounds this past fall when she finished with a scoring average of 76.86 in the five tournaments. She's capable of stringing great rounds together with four career top-10 finishes already on her resume, including a tie for third at the Stanford Intercollegiate last season and tie for seventh at the Peg Barnard Invitational two years ago. Those two tournaments were both played at the Stanford Golf Course.
Junior Anica Yoo is tied for 26th after firing a 4-over 75, while senior Seshia Telles and sophomore Chelsea Saelee rounded out the Beavers' scoring on the opening day with a 6-over 77 and 7-over 78, respectively. Sophomore Ashlee Pickerell shot a 12-over 83.
The final round will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday, and Oregon State will be paired with UNLV and California.
