Payton II Joins Dad In Triple-Double Club
December 16, 2014 | Men's Basketball
Gary Payton II joined his father Gary Payton as the only Beavers ever with triple-doubles as the younger Payton scored 10 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out 10 assists as Oregon State routed Grambling State 71-43 Monday at Gill Coliseum. The elder Payton had 20 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists vs. Portland on Nov. 26, 1988.
“It means a lot to me,” Payton II said. “I had a hint in the second half that I was close and I want to thank Coach Tinkle and my teammates for achieving such a special honor.”
“I never want to embarrass an opponent, but this was such a special moment for GP,” Tinkle said. “I would have pulled him out of the game if it wasn't for his father. This is something a father and son can share. The fact that it was a team statistic (assist) that he needed at the end; I was okay with it. I hope Coach (Shawn) Walker (Grambling State) understands the moment.”
Oregon State roared out to a 41-9 halftime lead and were never challenged. The team's fourth straight victory pushed the Beavers to 7-2 for the season while Grambling State fell to 2-6. Grambling State did not make a field goal until the 13:45 point of the first half and by then already trailed 15-4. The Tigers didn't score a point in the final 8:50 of the opening period.
The Beavers shot a blistering 70 percent from three-point range in the first half on 7 of 10 shooting and 58.3 percent overall. The Tigers made just 2 of 14 from the field in the first 20 minutes and their nine-point halftime total was the lowest for a Beaver opponent since Stanford tallied just four points, prior to the introduction of the shot clock, in the second half of a Jan. 28, 1980 contest at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif.
OSU pushed the lead to as many as 44 points in the second half at 66-22 with 7:56 left in the second half on a Victor Robbins jumper. Robbins, a junior forward, led all scorers in the game with a career-high 22 points and made a layup with 2:58 to play that gave Payton II the triple-double.
Payton II also had a career-high six steals.
Sophomore guard Malcolm Duvivier had a great game for the Beavers with 16 points, while Jarmal Reid added eight, Daniel Gomis finished with six and Olaf Schaftenaar added five.
The Beavers entered the game leading the Pac-12 for scoring defense allowing 56.5 points per game; that average will decrease further as Grambling State's point total was the lowest against the Beavers since USC tallied 44 points in a loss to OSU in Los Angeles Feb. 27, 2010.
The Beavers will attempt to win their fifth straight this Thursday against DePaul at Gill Coliseum at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to participate in a Teddy Bear toss with all the stuffed animals being donated to the Center Against Rape & Domestic Violence (CARDV). Tickets are available for the Pac-12 Networks game against the 6-3 Blue Demons at beavertickets.com as OSU attempts to remain undefeated at Ralph Miller Court this season.
