Stanford, Calif. – Quarterback Sean Mannion moved closer to the Pacific-12 Conference's career passing yardage record on Saturday but the Beavers fell 38-14 to Stanford at Stanford Stadium.

Mannion completed 14 of 30 passes for 122 yards and remained in second place with 12,134 yards. He needs 194 more yards to pass career leader Matt Barkley of USC, who threw for 12,327 yards from 2009-12.

The Beavers (4-3 overall, 1-3 Pac-12) were held to 221 yards by the Cardinal (5-3, 3-2 Pac-12), who lead the conference in total defense. Stanford won its fifth straight game in the series.

'There wasn't anything good about that game. I hated it,” OSU coach Mike Riley said. “We were not very good in any area. We got outplayed in every area.

“We didn't tackle well, we got outplayed offensively and we played poorly on special teams. I'm really disappointed.

“We took lost-yardage plays, which we knew we couldn't do,” as Mannion was sacked six times for minus-55 yards. “We got ourselves in a hole and appeared not to be able to do anything. We just couldn't execute at all. It was bad football.”

Stanford took a 7-0 lead on its first possession and was marching for a second when safety Ryan Murphy grabbed his first interception of the season. Following an OSU punt, linebacker Michael Doctor returned another interception to the Stanford 5-yard line and tailback Chris Brown powered over on the next play for a 7-7 tie with 2:03 left in the first quarter.

However, Stanford scored the final 21 points of the first half to take a 28-7 intermission lead. The Cardinal added 10 more unanswered points in the second half before OSU tailback Damien Haskins scored on a 1-yard run with 3:54 to play on his first career carry for the final margin.

That touchdown was set up by quarterback Luke Del Rio's 52-yard completion to Hunter Jarmon, a career-long for both players. Del Rio was 4-for-8 for 87 yards in his first meaningful game action.

Fullback Ricky Ortiz blocked a punt in the third quarter. It was OSU's first such play since Oct. 8, 2011, when Clayton York blocked a punt for a touchdown in a 37-27 victory against Arizona at Reser Stadium.

The Beavers resume Pac-12 Conference play against California at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. OSU's annual Homecoming game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. It is the first of three consecutive home games.

“We've got to put a good, solid game plan together,” Riley said. “We've got to do every bit of teaching we possibly can. We just have to have a great week of practice, focus on good football and get them ready to go play like crazy.

“That's where this season points to now. We took a big step back today.”
