LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - Four Oregon State crews finished their season at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships Sunday morning. Leading the Beavers was OSU's Open 4+ crew finished sixth in the Grand Final to earned sixth in the nation.
The Open 4+ crew of Mac Myers (coxswain), Chase Hooper, Dominic DeCarlo, Verrill Beaudro and Nick Aerne got off to a fast, high, aggressive start getting into the race early. However, the four paid for their aggressive start and couldn't sustain the speed of the lead crews finishing sixth in the nation.
"Our entire team gained great experience this weekend and in particular the young guys in the 4's learned a lot with each race," head coach Steve Todd said. "These guys can come away pretty happy with their performance these last three days, they really represented our program well."
The Beavers' Varsity Eight faced several boats they had seen in previous racing over the weekend and knew they could race with the field, but would need the best race of the year. OSU stayed close to the field but trailed through the first 1,000-meters. In the third 500, the Beavers moved past the crew from FIT into fifth and held strong despite a hard charge from FIT late in the race. OSU's fifth-place finish in the Third Level Final the Beavers claimed 17th overall.
The Junior Varsity Eight raced against field of crews with familiarity and similar speed. The Beavers JV8 once again trailed early before coming back with a strong sprint. They went from fifth to third walking through Holy Cross and then Stanford. The Beavers briefly edged ahead of Dartmouth but couldn't hang on to second when Dartmouth responded with a late surge. The third-place finish left the Beavers 15th overall.
OSU's other youthful four-man crew, the Varsity 4+ raced well too. The V4+ went off hard and stayed with the field for the first 1,000-meters but couldn't sustain the pace. They hung close to Princeton and Drexel and held off MIT in the late going to finish fifth in the Third Level Final, 17th overall.
"I'm extremely pleased with the efforts all these student-athletes throughout our program," Todd said. "I'm very appreciative of the senior class and how they showed the way for team, being leaders and particularly our captain, Chad Swenson."
This year's finish marks the first time since 2010 that the Beavers have qualified for IRAs when the OSU V8 finished 17th.
