DALLAS, Texas - Anica Yoo shot a 2-under 70 in the opening round of the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational on Friday to equal her best career round and lead the Oregon State women's golf team to eighth place at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Yoo had five birdies and three bogeys at the par-72, 6,301-yard Dallas Athletic Club and is tied for second place with two other golfers and only a stroke behind Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma. Yoo also shot a 2-under 70 at the Wildcat Invitational last season as a freshman. She has fired two 1-under 71's this season and now has four sub-par rounds in her career.
"Anica hit the ball exceedingly well today," head coach Risë Alexander said. "She had a lot of putts for birdie and made several today. She only ran into a few problems on one and 14 but recovered well from those. It is nice to see her finish strong and with confidence."
The Beavers sit in eighth place in the 15-team field with 36 holes to play after finishing the opening day with a 25-over 313. Kansas State leads the tournament with a 6-over 294, while Oklahoma is second (7-over 295) and Denver is third (8-over 296).

Junior Lauren Sewell is tied for 31st place after carding a 6-over 78, junior Rachael Fischer shot a 15-over 87 to put her in a tie for 70th.
"Lauren, Ashlee and Rachael all got off to poor starts," Alexander said. "Lauren did a nice job of recovering with a 1-under back nine. Ashlee and Rachael really need to focus in finding some feel around the greens and come out strong tomorrow. Seshia played much better than her score, and I have no doubt we will see her play much better and score much better tomorrow and Sunday."
Yoo bogeyed her first hole of the day, the par-5 first, before reeling off birdies on four of her next five holes, including chirps on the par-4 second, par-5 third, par-3 fourth and par-4 sixth. She bogeyed the 12th and 14th holes but ended the day with a birdie on the par-4 18th to equal her best score as a collegian.
The second round begins at 8 a.m. CT (6 a.m. PT) on Saturday with tee times off the first and 10th holes. The Beavers will be paired with Wisconsin and Oklahoma State, and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
