LOS ANGELES – The 2013 gymnastics season came to a close Friday night at the NCAA Championships with solid performances from Brittany Harris, Makayla Stambaugh and Chelsea Tang.
“Overall I'm really happy with the performances we had tonight,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “I was especially impressed with Chelsea Tang. It isn't easy to compete as an individual without the entire team for support and it didn't faze her at all. Brittany did a nice job too and finished strong and I'm so proud of Makayla and the career she's had for Oregon State. She's a fantastic gymnast and it's hard to believe her career is over.”
Tang, a sophomore from Eugene, Ore., led the trio scoring 39.275 in the all-around including scores of 9.85 on the floor exercise, a 9.825 on vault and 9.80's on uneven bars and balance beam. Tang established herself in the all-around lineup for the Beavers midway through the season, earning a spot in all four lineups in eight of the final nine meets of the year. She set a career-best on all four events plus the all-around in 2013 topping out at 39.400. The All-Pac-12 First Teamer on beam qualified to the NCAA Championships as the third place all-arounder at the NCAA Corvallis Regional.
Harris, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., reached the 39-point mark as well finishing at 39.075 with scores of 9.825 on the floor exercise and 9.80's on bars and beam. In 2013, she established career-bests on the bars and vault and earned All-Pac-12 First Team honors on the bars. She qualified to the NCAA Championships following a fifth-place all-around finish at the NCAA Corvallis Regional.
Stambaugh, who competed on the floor exercise, had a fantastic routine until she ran into trouble on her final tumbling pass and stepping out of bounds. She settled for a score of 9.675. The senior from Sacramento, Calif. ends her career as a four-time All-American after garnering first team honors on floor twice (2010 & '11) and bars once (2011) and second team honors on floor in 2012. Stambaugh qualified to the NCAA Championships after tying for first place on the floor at the NCAA Corvallis Regional.
