OSU uses three pins and another three forfeits to route the Mustangs for their seventh straight win
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Using three pins and three forfeits, the No. 8/9/11 ranked Oregon State wrestling team powered past Cal Poly Friday, by a 50-0 score on senior night in Gill Coliseum. All four OSU seniors in the starting line-up claimed victories as Oregon State racked up its first shutout against an opponent in more than two years.
The win is the Beavers' seventh straight and improved them to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the Pac-12, while the loss dropped the Mustangs to 2-8 and 1-4 in conference competition.
For the second straight week, Oregon State was spotted a 6-0 lead following a pin to open the meet. Last week it was Taylor Meeks in the 197 lb. match against CSU Bakersfield, this time around 165 pound redshirt freshman Seth Thomas notched a pin to give his mates a half dozen points to start the contest.
Following a Cal Poly forfeit at 174 lbs., which gave senior Cody Weishoff his 10th career dual victory, fellow senior Ty Vinson earned a 5-4 decision to make it a quick 15-0 Beaver lead. A Taylor Meeks major decision (11-1), and a Chad Hanke forfeit victory set the stage for the evening's most dramatic match.
With a comfy 25-0 advantage, Jim Zalesky sent true freshman Joey Palmer to the mats for the 125 lb. bout, where Palmer would trail Poly's Britian Longmire 4-2 after the first period. The 125 pounder fought back tying the match at 6-6 and sending it to overtime, where he be awarded a two point take down and the sudden 8-6 victory.
One more CP SLO forfeit at the 133 lb. weight class allowed senior Mike Mangrum (141 lbs.) and junior Scott Sakaguchi (149 lbs.) to flex their muscles by earning back-to-back pins to make it 46-0 Oregon State heading into the night's final bout.
That's where junior RJ Pena reigned supreme in the 157 lb. match-up, earning a 15-3 major decision and propelling his team to exactly half way to the century mark with an impressive 50-0 win.
Before the meet with the Mustangs, all five OSU seniors, Mangrum, Hanke, Vinson, Weishoff and 133 pounder Anthony Harris were honored for their contributions to the program over the last five years. The seniors were given roses to hand to the female members of their families, who were escorting them down the mat.
Jim Zalesky's senior class amassed a combined total of 333 victories since the 2008-09 season and together claim 22 years of collegiate wrestling experience.
The seniors as well as the rest of their team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m., when Oregon State welcomes in Arizona State for the final dual meet of the regular season. The meet will also be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks, only the second time this year, the OSU wrestlers have performed live on the newly formed TV network.

POST MEET QUOTES
Head Coach Jim Zalesky
On the 50-0 victory…
“We got spotted some but we got some pins though too. We can only control what we can control and we can't control that those guys (Cal Poly) had three guys banged up or hurt. We can't control that but everybody got a 'W' that stepped up to the mat.”
On senior night…
“The crowd got to honor them tonight so it's good for those guys because they have been kind of a foundation for our program. Those seniors are great guys.”
On how his team will deal with competing in back-to-back dual meets…
“Just build on this and use the momentum we had tonight. We have to keep wrestling well and we have to weigh in again on the second day, so we have to be tougher. I am looking for our guys to be tougher and wrestler even better than we did tonight.”
Redshirt freshman Seth Thomas
On his pin to start the meet…
“I was excited to get to start this one out and knew that the expectation of starting one out is with a fall, so I just went out there and went for it. I think a pin just helps set a tone for the dual and we kind of feed off that.”
POST MEET NOTES
