STANFORD, Calif. - Joe Burton posted his third double-double of the season, and seventh in his career, with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but Oregon State couldn't slow down a red-hot shooting Stanford team in an 81-73 loss Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion.
The Beavers (11-11, 1-8 Pac-12) fought back from a 10-point first-half deficit to take a 53-51 lead with 11:50 to play. The teams traded leads 10 times after that, but the Cardinal (14-8, 5-4) nailed a three-pointer on four straight possessions to grab a 71-66 advantage and cruised to the win.
"I was very proud of my team," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "Stanford made plays. "They were 14-of-25 from three's. It's disappointing but I feel like our guys are making progress. I thought our guys played a good game and we just got beaten by a better team."
Roberto Nelson had 20 points, while Ahmad Starks added 15, Devon Collier chipped in 10 and Eric Moreland came off the bench to add eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Cardinal shot 56 percent from three-point range, going 14-for-25, the best by an Oregon State opponent this season. Chasson Randle led Stanford with 20 points, while Josh Huestis had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Oregon State raced out to an 8-0 lead before Stanford came back to tie it 17-17 with 11:40 to play in the half. The Cardinal then went on a 12-2 run to take a 29-19 advantage at the 7:42 mark behind a barrage of three-pointers. Nelson and Burton combined to score 12 of the Beavers' next 14 points to cut the lead to 35-33 at the break.
The Beavers shot 50 percent from the field and out-rebounded Stanford 18-10 in the first half, but the Cardinal got 17 points off 11 Oregon State turnovers to hold the lead at halftime.
The Beavers return home to face Utah (10-11, 2-7 Pac-12) at Gill Coliseum on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a nationally-televised game on the Pac-12 Networks.
