Telles Goes On Birdie Run To Shoot 73 In First Round Of UCF Challenge

SORRENTO, Fla. - Junior Seshia Telles reeled off four straight birdies on the back nine to shoot a 1-over 73 and lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the opening round of the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla., on Sunday.
Telles bogeyed four of her first five holes at the par-71, 6,374-yard RedTail Golf Club, before catching fire on the back nine to card birdies on the 11th through 14th holes and salvage a solid start to the spring season.
Sophomore Anica Yoo also had a good round with a 3-over 75, but the rest of the team struggled as the Beavers finished the opening round with a 17-over 305 and in 18th place at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
"Today obviously didn't go as planned," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "However, I felt like we struck the ball well and stuck to our game plans. The trouble came around the greens and their ability to get the ball in the hole.

"Seshia had a good comeback today, and hat is very encouraging for her future performances. Anica Yoo also had a solid round and should be able to build on that for tomorrow and Tuesday. The rest of the team will need to substantially step up their performances. There is no doubt in our minds as coaches that this team is capable of shooting under par on this course in these near perfect weather conditions."
Junior Lauren Sewell shot a 6-over 78 that included two birdies, while freshman Chelsey Lind carded an 11-over 83.
Telles finished the day with five birdies, but it was her four-hole streak of birds that helped her move up the leaderboard and finish the first day in a tie for 28th place. The birdie run came on the par-3 11th, par-5 12th, par-4 13th and par-4 14th holes that propelled her to a 2-under 34 on the back nine.
Yoo was her usual steady self with two birdies and three bogeys through 14 holes, before taking an unfortunate double on the par-3 15th. She bounced back with three pars to finish the day in a tie for 49th and in the upper half of the 99-person field.
South Carolina is atop the team leaderboard with a 4-under 284, while Casey Kennedy and Natalie Wille, both of Augusta State, hold the individual lead with a 5-under 67.
The second round begins at 8:30 a.m. ET with the Beavers teeing off on the 10th hole with Coastal Carolina and Georgia State. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
