Head Coach Mike Riley
On the tough loss to Washington…
“It's really, really disappointing. We obviously failed in every way. Right from the opening kickoff, the big play on the opening kickoff, to every phase in the game, there's no getting around it. We just totally failed all the parts, we're all responsible.”
On game preparation this past week…
“I thought it was a real good week. These are good kids, they work hard… It's like I said, we missed the boat here. We were not ready… and everybody is responsible, all the parts. Playing, coaching, all the parts are in it. I did not see it coming because I thought we had good practices, good enthusiasm for work… and then all the ways tonight, whether the emotion of the game, the competition of the game, the execution of the game, they won them all.”
On Brandin Cooks' performance…
“Unbelievable. Talent, effort, leadership, all of that. He is just a wonderful kid to have around and he just continues to, I think, be a great example for never quitting. He is shattering all the records right now so it's pretty amazing… he gets a little bit of attention.”
Washington Head Coach Steve Sarkisian
Opening Comment…
“My first thought and comment about the game, I'm really, really proud of our guys responding again. They had a great deal of grit and resolve, and they are a close-knit group. I really challenged them on coming out tonight with great energy and being excited to have the opportunity in a good environment against a good football team, and I think that was key. I think our energy was great. I just challenged them on playing the game and executing the game. We really did that. We took care of the football offensively, we created turnovers on defense and we obviously ran the football extremely well. When you're playing good ball and able to run it like that it makes life much easier. On a quarterback making his first career start, I thought Cyler (Miles) was real effective, especially early in the game. There's plenty of stuff for him to learn from from that. I thought Marcus Peters obviously just a fantastic game with the two interceptions, the forced fumble and the recovery. All in all, I thought our offensive line played very good against an aggressive front. It was a good win for us.”
On when he made the call to start quarterback Cyler Miles…
“I was really clear what I was going to do with Cyler going. We went out to pregame and Keith (Price) made it hard, because he threw the ball really well in pregame; the best he had throw it all week. We really came to the locker room and said for us the right thing to do is to play Cyler. He's prepared all week to do it. We knew we had Keith at our disposal if we needed him for an emergency standpoint. But we felt like for Keith's overall being and getting healthy, and for the team that Cyler's preparation was the right thing to do.”
On what the team did well in the game…
“Well, we obviously took care of the ball better right from the start. Again, we created turnovers and that's been a key for us. They were excited and they were on fire, but it wasn't false enthusiasm. It was real, it was genuine and it was together. I think that speaks to the leadership on the team.”
Quarterback Cyler MilesOn the effect of the run game and how it helped a freshmenquarterback making his first start…
“It does take a lot of pressure off and it makes my job easier, so I'm thankful for that.”
On the game not being close…
“Going into it I was expecting a dogfight. I assumed it would be closer, but we're out there playing to the best of our ability, and it happened to be somewhat of a blowout. I can't ask for anything better than that.”
On what he learned as a starter…
“Probably just consistency, the length of the game, and not forcing balls too early. It's a long game;it's four quarters, so just consistency, staying on top of my reads, and knowing when to check it down.”
Running Back Deontae Cooper
On his big night running the ball...
"I know that hard work pays off in anything you do. I knew that if I kept going to work I was going to spring one."
On long run down sideline...
"First and foremost, Jesse (Callier) did a good job of keeping the corner out, and then it was just off to the races."
On anticipating a strong rushing game...
"Collectively, I didn't foresee that, but I thought Bishop (Sankey) would have a great day. I think it speaks to how many great backs we have here. For Dwayne (Washington) to do what he did, for Jesse (Callier) to do what he did, for Bishop to do what he did, and for me to do what I did. We have a lot of good backs, and that's just the beginning."
On playing for Steve Sarkisian...
"It's awesome. I love Coach Sark without a doubt. With everything I've been through, he's supported me from day one, I love that guy."
