Oregon State Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Mike Riley
On if the extra week of preparation helped…
"I think that the whole thing was not getting to play last week. I think that we had a great camp and coming into a game like this you know how good the other team is and what they have done. I feel so good about the work ethic of this team and how they practiced and prepared. They played their hearts out today and I am so proud of them. It is unbelievable; they just played like crazy to win the game.
On looking for actual victories and not moral victories…
“We need to win, that was the message. The preparation has been outstanding. I think all the coaches did a great job with this team. Offensively, that might have been one of the best games (OSU) ever played.
On the play of the defense…
“It was just a great performance. Guys were very sound. I think one of the key elements was that everyone worked hard and was winning off the block. Those are big guys (on the Wisconsin offensive line) but our defensive coaches had a great plan. When we got into situations where we threw in a nickel and dime defense we made some big plays and that combination is awesome. It is about play making and they played really hard.”
On moving in the right direction with next week's bye…
"It's early. It's great to win a game and it's important to build confidence and let these guys see what they're capable of doing. Now we just go back to work and try to get better."
On opening the season with a win like this…
"There have been some great games and some great teams. We certainly haven't had an opener like this. We've started pretty slowly through the years, so this was a good opener for the Beavers."
Sophomore Quarterback Sean Mannion
On the upset victory…
“Our team battled all day long and I can't say enough about our offensive line, I was hardly hit all day. Our defense played outstanding and just kept giving us chances and possessions. It was just an absolute team win and finally shows that all our hard work paid off.”
On the extra week to prepare for Wisconsin…
“I think the extra week definitely helped. Our coaches kept us focused all week and they had a good game plan. We were able to execute it well and again we can thank the coaches for helping us stay focused.”
On his decision making…
“I thought it was okay. I need to see the film but talking with (Offensive Coordinator & Quarterbacks) Coach Langsdorf over the headset there were still plays I could have made. By no means was it perfect but we are going to work off this and keep moving forward.”
Sophomore Wide Receiver Brandin Cooks
On how the win feels after last season's loss to Wisconsin…
“It feel's amazing coming off a season like that. We all were hungry, came out and played with fire. Our defense stepped up and the offense had to make the plays. It felt real good.”
On if not playing last week turned into an advantage…
“We were enthusiastic to play. When you practice that long, you just want to play. Once last week's game was canceled it was a little disappointing but we knew we had to step up and work hard to get the big win against Wisconsin.”
On what was going through his mind during the review of the on-side kick…
“I was just hoping we got that ball back. I was a little nervous, but I was watching the play and I knew they didn't go ten yards, so I wasn't that nervous.”
On his touchdown reception…
“Coach Riley called a good play. We looked at the coverage and as soon as he called the play, I knew something special was going to happen. Once we called it and the ball was in the air, I just had to focus in and lock that ball up.”
Senior cornerback Jordan Poyer
On what he thought the biggest play on defense was…
“We had a lot of fourth down stops. You could go on and on so I don't think there is just one, because everyone was making plays. It was a fun game to play
On where this win ranks in his OSU career…
“Me personally, probably one of the top. This is my senior season and the first game. This might be one of the top moments of my college career. I still believe there are a lot more moments to come in my senior season. The sky is the limit for us right now.”
Wisconsin Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Bret Bielema
Opening Statement…
"A lot of credit goes to Oregon State. They did a lot of good things today to go out and get a win."
On the Oregon State defensive effort...
"There just wasn't any room down there. We didn't handle the pressure very well and they brought some pressure. They did a really nice job of controlling the line of scrimmage."
On the Wisconsin defense...
"I thought our defense played their tails off. We were extremely fortunate to be down only 3-0 at the start of the 2nd half."
On whether or not he felt his team was overconfident from last year's 35-0 win...
"I hope not. The team we saw last year is now a much improved one with a quarterback that can be very accurate. I give a lot of credit again to Oregon State. Mike Riley is a very good football coach. They do a good job at beating ranked opponents and they did it again today."
Running Back Montee Ball
On Oregon State's run defense...
"They were actually presenting what we had planned; we just didn't do a great job executing. Oregon State did a great job, they deserved it."
Kicker Kyle French
On the overturned onside kick...
"I thought they (OSU) had touched it first, but it's over with and there's nothing we can do now."
On Oregon State...
"They fought until the end, and Oregon State is a great team."
Outside Linebacker Mike Taylor
On the Oregon State touchdown drive...
"They were able to move the chains and pick (up) yards and that was enough for them to win the game."
On Oregon State's play...
"I wasn't surprised. Oregon State has been a good team. Last year was last year. Oregon State is a new team and they played well."
Middle Linebacker Chris Borland
On the Beaver offense...
"They made plays. They had a good scheme going with their pass routes. Credit should be given to them."
