EUGENE, Ore. - Camille Saxton had 10 kills but the Oregon State volleyball team dropped its Pac-12 Conference opener to No. 8 Oregon in three sets (12-25, 24-26, 15-25) Wednesday at Matt Knight Arena in the first 2012 match of the Civil War Series presented by the Northwest Ford Dealers, PacificSource Health Plans and Wells Fargo.
The loss snapped the Beavers' win streak at eight matches as Oregon State dropped to 10-3 on the year and 0-1 in Pac-12 Conference play. Oregon, meanwhile, improved to 10-0 and 1-0 against Pac-12 teams.
"We really needed to get them out of their system by serving well but we did not," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "Conversely, we did not pass the ball very well. We just had an off night passing."
Saxton finished with a .265 hitting percentage to pace the Beavers, who tallied a .209 mark for the match. Oregon, however, hit .343 and was led offensively by Ariana Williams, who had 14 kills.
The Beavers out-blocked Oregon, 11-5, lead by Saxton and Arica Nassar, who each had five kills. The Ducks, however, nearly doubled the Beavers in digs, leading 53-27.
Oregon took the first set, 25-12, and did so by scoring 12 of the 15 points of the set. The Beavers hit .286 during the set but the Ducks countered with a .593 percentage. Saxton led the Beavers with four of the team's 10 kills during the frame.
The Ducks took the second set, 26-24, by overcoming a late 19-16 Oregon State lead. The Beavers held Oregon to a .091 hitting percentage but OSU hit .195 itself. Oregon State had eight blocks during the set after totaling one in the first set.
Oregon won the final set on the strength of a .471 hitting percentage. The Beavers jumped out to a 6-1 lead and led late at 9-8, but the Ducks managed to gain the lead and hold off Oregon State's momentum for the match win.
The Beavers head to Los Angeles Friday for an 8 p.m. PT matchup with No. 1 UCLA. The match can be seen live on the Pac-12 Networks nationally.
