CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior Seshia Telles fired a pair of even-par 72 rounds on Monday to lead the Oregon State women's golf team to a fifth place showing through 36 holes at the Oregon State Invitational that is being played at Trysting Tree Golf Club. Tuesday's final round begins at 8 a.m. and admission is free to the public.
The Beavers finished the first day of the two-day, 54-hole event they are hosting with a 21-over 294-303--597 at the par-72, 6,141-yard layout and are just a stroke behind Idaho (20-over 596) and two strokes back of Gonzaga (19-over 595). Pac-12 foes Washington and Washington State are first and second with an 11-under 565 and 15-over 591, respectively.
"The morning round was a good opener for us," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "I saw lots of positive improvement from last year. Seshia and Anica (Yoo) played well and I know they can improve tomorrow. Both managed their game well and stayed focused for the entire nine hours they were on the course.
"I was also pleased with the first performance from our freshman Chelsea Saelee who opened with a 75. The afternoon round was not typical of what we will see in the future. A few of our players became tentative as the course firmed up."

Telles, who is Oregon State's career scoring average leader after her first two seasons at 76.15, had three birdies and three bogeys in the morning and two birdies and two bogeys in the afternoon round. She stayed away from the big numbers all day and put herself in contention for the individual title with an even-par 72-72--144 for a tie for fifth place.
SooBin Kim of Washington was the lone player in the field to shoot two subpar rounds, going 71-70--141 to take the clubhouse lead by a stroke over her teammate Charlotte Thomas (2-under 142).
The steady Anica Yoo opened her sophomore campaign with a 1-under 71 in the morning and a 2-over 74 in the afternoon to put her in a tie for ninth place with a 1-over 145. She had five birdies during her first 18 holes, but took an unfortunate double-bogey on the par-5 fifth hole, and added two tweets with four bogeys in her second 18.
Freshman Chelsea Saelee had a respectable start to her college career with a 3-over 75 in the morning and a 6-over 78 in the afternoon for a tie for 38th place with a 9-over 153. Senior Rachael Fischer is tied for 63rd with a 15-over 80-79--159 and junior Lauren Sewell is tied for 70th after a 17-over 76-85--161.
"We will learn from this and work diligently to improve on the strategy for 36-hole days of competition," Alexander said. "I also noticed that our short game execution and strategy, particularly on the par 5's, could be better. We were in position for birdies and the pitch or chip didn't work out well. We can definitely improve on this and our strategy on those holes. This is our house, and if they can prepare mentally for tomorrow, we will own it."
"I expect us to come out tomorrow ready to play and ready to go low. The team and I are both so glad to have a home event again. Trysting Tree is in excellent championship shape and we are glad to have so many teams here competing. Thanks also to the many staff and volunteers at Trysting today for their help with the event."
The Beavers have three players competing as individuals with junior Melissa Gibbons (17-over 81-80--161), senior Chelsey Lind (19-over 76-87--163) and sophomore Lauren Fischer (20-over 81-83--164) all having the opportunity to compete on their home course.
