Kapalua, MAUI - Senior Whitney French equaled her career-best round with a 1-under 71 to lift the Oregon State women's golf team to a tie for fifth place after 36 holes on Monday at the inaugural Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Kapalua, Maui.
The Beavers, ranked 50th in the nation by golfstat.com, finished the long first day of the 54-hole event with a 29-over 305-300--605 at the par-71, 6,022-yard Kapalua Bay Course and enter Tuesday's final round looking for their fifth top-five finish of the season.
"I was very pleased with the team's performance today," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "The weather is great down here and the greens are excellent. We really haven't played this golf course before, but overall, I was pleased with the strategy and the game plan they had on most of their holes."

French, who had seven birdies in her record-tying round, had shot a 1-under 71 on two separate occasions before Monday, most recently at the Rose City Collegiate in September 2010 when she finished the tournament with a 1-under 71-72-72--215, the second-lowest 54-hole round in Oregon State history. She is sixth on the individual leader board with a 2-over 71-75--146 heading into Tuesday's final round.
"Whitney's ball striking was excellent today," Alexander said. "I think Whitney had the most stamina today. It was a very long day since we played 36 holes. This course is very hilly and it takes a lot out of you to remain focused throughout the tournament. Her tempo was great and her putting was good."
Freshman Anica Yoo was steady as usual with a pair of 3-over 75's and sits in a tie for 16th place, while sophomore Seshia Telles shot the Beavers' best afternoon round with a 1-over 73 and is in 29th place with a 9-over 80-73--153.
Sophomore Lauren Sewell is tied for 36th place with a 12-over 79-77--156 and junior Rachael Fischer wrapped up the first day with a 24-over 85-83--168 for a tie for 68th place. Senior Elyse Okada, a native of Kahului, Hawai'i, is competing as an individual and finished the day with a 19-over 81-82--163.
No. 14 Colorado leads the tournament with a 12-over 588, while No. 15 California is second with a 15-over 291, No. 13 Tennessee is third with a 16-over 292 and No. 36 Ole Miss rounds out the top-four with a 18-over 594.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. HT (11 a.m. PT) on Tuesday with a shotgun start and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
