Salt Lake City, Utah – Freshman Ali Gibson (Woodbridge, Calif.) scored a team-high 13 points, but the Oregon State women's basketball team (18-10, 9-8 Pac-12) fell short in a 63-56 overtime loss at Utah (14-14, 7-10 Pac-12) on Thursday evening in the Huntsman Center.
Junior Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) was the other Oregon State player to reach double-figures in the points column with 11, while both junior Mollee Schwegler (Rainier, Ore.) and sophomore Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) had nine points each.
Leading the defensive efforts was junior Patricia Bright (Phoenix, Ariz.) with a team-high eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Utes scored first, but after seven tie scores and two lead changes, the Beavers took the eventual lead at the 15-14 mark on a Pinto layup with 9:43 to play.
Oregon State closed the half on a 16-8 stretch, leading by as many as nine, counting a pair of three-pointers from Schwegler with Gibson and Martin both counting one from long distance. The Beavers shot 46.2 percent (12-26) to Utah's 33.3 percent (9-27) to take a 29-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
But Utah came out of the break outshooting the Beavers 41.4 percent (12-29) to 36 percent (9-25), connecting five times from beyond the arc and going on short runs spurred by those three-pointers by Rachel Messer, Iwalani Rodrigues and Cheyenne Wilson.
Despite the runs, the Beavers hung onto the lead through most of the half despite Utah tying the game at 38 behind three-pointers by Gibson, Schwegler and Indendi, but the game came down to the wire tied at 51. Gibson gave the Beavers the 53-51 lead on a driving layup, but Utah forced the overtime on a Utah jumper to force overtime.
Messer scored the first six points for the Utes with Martin matching the score early at 56 all, but four final free throws under 30 seconds by Utah sealed the fate of the game.
Utah's Michelle Plouffe led all scorers with 19 points, while Taryn Wicijowski pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Beavers shot 37.3 percent (22-59) in the game, 41.7 percent (10-24) from three-point range.
