TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior Rachael Fischer and sophomore Seshia Telles each shot a 3-over 75 in the second round of the Wildcat Invitational on Monday to keep the Oregon State women's golf team in eighth place heading into Tuesday's final round.
All five Oregon State golfers shot in the 70's at the par-72, 6,520-yard Golf Club at Vistoso on Monday to help the Beavers knock five strokes off Sunday's opening round and put them in position for a top-five finish with a 33-over 307-302--609 at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
"We got off to a little bit of a slow start and didn't play our best on the front nine," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "But then we really brought it back on the back nine when the girls got into a better place mentally and were able to score."
Freshman Anica Yoo and sophomore Lauren Sewell both responded with much better scores in the second round as each shot a 4-over 76 after Yoo posted an 8-over 80 and Sewell shot an uncharacteristic 13-over 85 on Sunday. Senior Whitney French, who led the Beavers with a 2-over 74 on Sunday, had three double-bogeys on Monday but battled her way to a 6-over 78.

On the individual leader board, Telles is tied for 25th, Fischer and French are both tied for 33rd, Yoo is tied for 47th and Sewell is tied for 62nd. Telles and Fischer each led the Beavers with three birdies apiece on Monday.
"It was a great comeback for Lauren," Alexander said. "I think when you play poorly on a golf course when you are either on the green grass or in the cactus it's sometimes intimidating to go out there the next day and really make a big improvement. But Lauren was able to do that. She refocused, stuck to her game plan and made the improvements that she needed to make.
"Seshia is just so steady in the fairways and on the green," Alexander added. "She did get into some trouble on the front side in a couple of holes that cost her some shots. At the same time, she remained focused and was able to fight those difficulties."
The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with a shotgun start and live scoring is available throughout the tournament at golfstat.com.
"We are going to talk tonight about getting off to a better start and try to create situations in warm-up they can mentally be prepared for," Alexander said. "The team needs to be fully functional at eight in the morning. If they can get off to a better start, it should definitely show in their scores tomorrow."
