SEATTLE, Wash. -
The No. 8 Oregon State gymnastics team beat No. 21 Washington on the road Friday night 195.975-194.675. Junior All-American Makayla Stambaugh scored 39.350 to win the all-around for the second straight week and fellow Beavers Leslie Mak and Brittany Harris finished second and third in the all-around.
"This is a good win and big improvement from our last meet on away from home," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "But there is still work to do in the gym and we'll be back at it on Monday to get ready for next week at UC Davis."
Oregon State opened the meet on the uneven bars where it is ranked No. 3 in the nation on the event and surpassed the 49-point mark for the fourth time in four meets finishing the opening rotation with the lead 49.100-48.850. In the customary fashion, the second half of the bars lineup was lights out with Makayla Stambaugh scoring 9.85, Leslie Mak tallying a 9.90 routine and Olivia Vivian notching a score of 9.85. Brittany Harris and Hannah Casey registered scores of 9.775 and 9.725 respectively.
The Beavers hit all six of their vaults in the second stanza to score 48.925 as a team with Stambaugh leading the way nailing her vault of 9.85 to win the event. Kelsi Blalock hit her vault to score 9.825 and Harris and Mak each vaulted to scores of 9.775. Melanie Jones added a season-high 9.70. OSU had stretched its lead to 98.025-97.525 at the halfway point.
While Oregon State continued to add to its lead in the third rotation on the floor, the Huskies were forced to count a fall on the balance beam. The Beavers' floor lineup was led once again by Stambaugh, who posted a score of 9.85, while Mak also eclipsed the 9.8-mark with a score of 9.825. Blalock, Jones and Vivian each chipped in matching scores of 9.775 to give the Beavers a team score of 49.000.
OSU finished the meet strongly on the balance beam with six more hit routines. Blalock won the event with a score of 9.825 just ahead of Mak's 9.80. Jones, Stambaugh and Vivian were part of a six-way tie for third on the beam with matching scores of 9.775.
The Beavers remain on the road next week when they travel to the state of California for the only time in 2012 visiting UC Davis next Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
Oregon State returns to Corvallis the following Friday evening to host California and UCLA for the annual Pink Out meet. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets early to avoid waiting in line. The Gill Coliseum box office will open at 5 p.m. on the night of the meet and the doors will open at 6 p.m.
