Meet comes down to the final match between heavyweights with Gophers coming out on top in double overtime
Minneapolis, Minn. - No. 13 Oregon State had the second ranked team in the nation almost down for the count, but a nine point come back and a win in the meet's final match gave Minnesota the 21-18 victory, Saturday night in Minneapolis.
With the meet tied 18-18 heading into the last bout, heavyweights Chad Hanke and Tony Nelson took to the mats looking to hand their respective schools a victory in this top 15 match-up. Hanke, ranked No. 6 in the nation got out to a 1-0 lead after a scoreless first period over No. 1 rated Nelson. The match would be tied up in the third period (1-1), before going to overtime, where the Gophers' top ranked heavyweight grabbed a 2-1 lead. After tying the match up at two a piece in the fifth period, Hanke took the lead (3-2), with an escape in the seventh period, but it was an escape from Nelson in the following frame that tied the heavyweight bout up at three a piece. Another point for eight seconds of riding time at the conclusion of the second OT gave Nelson and Minnesota the slimmest of victories, 4-3 in the match and 21-18 in the meet.
After falling behind 6-0 following the first two matches, Oregon State reeled off 12 straight points with victories by No. 5 Mike Mangrum with a 7-6 decision in the 141 lb. bout, No. 8 Scott Sakaguchi from a fall (1:30) in the 149 lb. match and No. 10 RJ Pena with another fall (2:27) in the battle of 157 pounders.
Following three straight victories by Minnesota in the 165, 174 and 184 lb., weight classes, sophomore and No. 10 ranked Taylor Meeks pulled off an 8-2 decision over U of M's Scott Schiller (No. 7) in the 197 lb. match. The victory by Meeks was his ninth of the season and gave the Beavers three crucial points to even the meet up and place the outcome in the hands of the school's two heavyweights.
With the loss, Oregon State fell to 1-2 on the year and remained 1-0 in the Pac-12, while Minnesota improved to 7-2 overall and stayed at 1-0 in the Big Ten. The Beavers will have less than 24 hours to reflect on the Minnesota meet and shift their focus toward North Dakota State as they and Head Coach Jim Zalesky travel to Fargo to do battle with the Bison, Sunday at 12 p.m. Pacific.
