AURORA, Ore. - The Oregon State women's golf team parlayed a strong afternoon round into a climb up the leaderboard on Monday to sit in second place at the Rose City Collegiate with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday.
The Beavers shot a 23-over 311 in the morning round at the par-72, 6,080-yard Langdon Farms Golf Club and then knocked 15 strokes off their afternoon round for an 8-over 296 to move from fifth place to second with a 31-over 607.
Seattle U. leads through 36 holes with an 18-over 296-298--594, 13 strokes better than Oregon State, which is two strokes ahead of Northern Arizona and Cal State Fullerton. The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes.
"The second round went much better today," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "We got off to a shaky start this morning in the first round but were able to stay patient and rebound well in our second round. Lauren and Seshia played very steady this afternoon. Thirty-six holes can be a long day when you are struggling. So I was proud of them for staying focused and determined this afternoon. We need to come out tomorrow morning ready to start focused and mentally prepared."
Junior Lauren Sewell was solid in both rounds, shooting a 3-over 75 in the morning and an even-par 72 in the afternoon, to put herself in a tie for third place with a 3-over 147. It was a strong comeback after finishing in a tie for 63rd in the Beavers' opening tournament of the fall season, the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, with a 22-over 238. Her best career finish in a three-round tournament is a tie for seventh place at last season's Peg Barnard Invitational.
Junior Seshia Telles, who shot the second-best three-round score in school history at the Oregon State Invitational, had a surprising 9-over 81 in the morning but got back to her usual play in the afternoon with a 2-under 70 to make a huge climb on the individual leaderboard, going from a tie for 40th place to a tie for eighth with a 7-over 151. She will go for her fifth career top-10 finish, and second this season in as many tournaments, on Tuesday.
Freshman Chelsea Saelee shot a pair of 5-over 77's to put her in a tie for 19th place with a 10-over 154, while sophomore Anica Yoo is tied for 22nd with an 11-over 78-77--155 and senior Rachael Fischer is tied for 34th after a 14-over 81-77--158.
The Beavers are 13 strokes behind Seattle U. but have an opportunity to claim their first team title in a three-round tournament in four years when they won the Giustina Memorial Classic that was played at Trysting Tree Golf Club in September of 2008.
Three Oregon State golfers are competing as individuals with senior Chelsey Lind leading the group with a 13-over 77-80--157 for a tie for 31st. Sophomore Lauren Fischer is in 60th with a 20-over 85-79--164 and junior Melissa Gibbons finished the first day with a 24-over 86-82--168 for a tie for 66th.
